Eh. I wouldn't recommend this for a class.

It's a textbook, so it's not going to be as immediately interesting. But some of the chapters are better than others. The essays are not always clear, or interesting, so sometimes I wondered why they were included. Overall, I would prefer not to use this book. The ideas are interesting, and the idea for the book is a good one, but the actual essays are tedious, occasionally confusing, and some of them are so dry.

Putnam/Tarcher joins the party with Jeff Schmidt's 365 Buddha: Daily Meditations. While there's nothing original about the book's concept, Schmidt is refreshingly honest about that: the opening epigraph actually assures readers that "nothing new will be said here." This is a nice book of short daily meditations, but it's virtually indistinguishable from its peers.

A longtime practitioner of Buddhism, Schmidt has assembled a winning anthology of insights, poems, parables, and stories from the Buddhist tradition, ranging from its earliest texts to 20th-century works. Not least of the book's virtues is that its compiler understands, as few writers on any subject do, that less is frequently more. Schmidt's fine little book comes with a helpful glossary of terms not fully explicated elsewhere in the text. Highly recommended.

I'm going back to the drawing board to look for something I can understand.

To be honest, I'm just starting to dabble in Buddhism. I like the other materials I've purchased, but this one has been a bit difficult to relate to. It feels like MAYBE it is created for someone who has studied original texts, or maybe a monk? I'm only, just barely, following along with about 20% of what I read. I appreciate that meditation should stretch your mind a bit, and that these are mostly concepts to chew on, but... woof, they are a bit much. Maybe the original text with a helpful interpretive/layman's text under it? I don't need my hand held through everything, but some of these I even wonder why they are meditations and what I should be focusing on.

If you are new and trying to seek refuge, maybe this isn't the book you seek. I'm going back to the drawing board to look for something I can understand.

Daily Quotes not daily meditations. I mean I could meditate on the quote daily however not as the title suggest didn't like I get daily quotes aleady delivered via email that I reflect upon.

Poet Jack Prelutsky again pairs up with two-time Caldecott Honor artist Peter S�s to create Scranimal Island, a fantastical, off-the-map place inhabited by unusual animals from Hippopotamushrooms to Potatoads to a pride of Broccolions. A boy and girl on a scooter, equipped with essentials from umbrella to inner tube, fly from habitat to habitat over S�s's dreamy, mountainous landscapes � la Tibet: Through the Red Box. They make their way through the clutch of Spinachickens, past the Camelberta Peaches to the "Sweet Porcupineapple, / Unflappable chap, / You happily amble / All over the map." Prelutsky's biological inventions are as clever as they are silly, and it's wonderful that kids are allowed to figure out the hybrid themselves in Rhinocerose, Cardinalbacore, etc. Prelutsky's glee is contagious, and kids will get a kick out of the wordplay in poems like "Oh Sleek Bananaconda": "You slither on your belly, / And you slither on your chin. / You're only unappealing / As you shed your slinky skin." Pronunciation guides for each creature garnish each page, in case you can't pronounce Toucanemones right off the bat, and an iconic guide to the island's animals adorns the table of contents page. Gorgeous endpapers reveal S�s's map of Scranimal Island and its curious denizens. It's impossible to pick a favorite, between the unbelievably cute Pandaffodil and the detested Radishark. The meisters of madcap are at it again. This time, Prelutsky and Sis (The Dragons Are Singing Tonight) head off on safari to Scranimal Island, an exotic spot full of odd hybrid creatures just ripe for their devious brand of silliness. Whether tracking a caravan of Camelberta Peaches ("All have humpy, bumpy backs, Stocked with water, juice, and snacks, So the creatures never need Wonder where to drink or feed"), avoiding the clutches of the dread Radishark ("Its appalling, bulbous body Is astonishingly red, And its fangs are sharp and gleaming In its huge and horrid head") or spying on the Bananaconda ("How sinuous and sly you are, How slippery, how yellow"), they scramble up a smorgasbord of flora and fauna. Prelutsky tweaks language with his characteristic glee, wedging in plenty of humor ("Poor Avocadodos, Ungainly and green, You're gone from today's Biological scene") and, as always when Si s is on board, his exquisite artistry raises the bar, adding depth to Prelutsky's light verse. Plying his trademark delicate line and crosshatching, Si s sets off the fantastic creatures against spare, expansive vistas, investing the muted ink-and-watercolor illustrations with a quizzically visionary style. A pair of brightly clad young explorers lurk at the edge of each scene, adding a droll visual grace note. All ages.

Grade 2-5-Prelutsky introduces the curious inhabitants of Scranimal Island through his skillful and captivating poems. The creatures, such as the Mangorilla and Orangutangerine, are each a cross between an animal and a fruit, vegetable, or flower, and behave accordingly. For instance, "On a bump beside a road/Sits a lowly POTATOAD,/Obviously unaware/Of its own existence there./On its coarse and warty hide,/It has eyes on every side,/Eyes that fail, apparently,/To take note of what they see." S's's illustrations are a wonderful combination of the eerie and humorous (readers might be reminded of his fantastical island in Komodo! [Greenwillow, 1993]), and give children a visual clue as to the creature's elements, in case they haven't figured it out yet. (A rebus-like chart on the back cover is more explicit, illustrating "potato + toad = potatoad", etc.) Hippopotamushrooms smile benevolently from their forest floor, the Pandaffodil munches bamboo beatifically, majestic Broccolions stalk the lithe Antelopetunia. These black-line and watercolor illustrations in a light palette take up three-quarters of each spread; the verses, in large and legible black type, accompany them on a pastel-tinged antique paper background. On occasion on this island, readers may come across a creature that is a cross of two animals (no plant matter involved), such as the Ostricheetah or the Stormy Petrelephant. Though as eloquently described, they are simply not as funny as the Porcupineapple or the Avocadodos, and somehow spoil the fun. The point of nonsense, after all, is to stick to the rules-just, the wrong rules. Nevertheless, Prelutsky and S's have pulled off something great here-it is their best collaboration to date.

Fantastic read for children of all ages

Jack Prelutsky books have become a special bond between my 6 year old son and I. He has this book, Behold the Umbrellaphant, and Stardines, and we both love the silly poetry. We both also like music, so the rhythm of the poems is fun as we can almost sing it. He loves the wackiness and thoroughly enjoys the pictures. The silly names of the animals are fun for him to try and sound out, so not only is it fun for me to read to him, but he also is learning about words as he reads it to me, without even realizing it. I'd buy any book by Prelutsky and recommend them for anyone with children of any age (my 10 year old daughter loves them as well).

My son loves this book. Such a silly mix up of animals and food, with very catchy rhymes. My 3.5 yr old has most of them memorized and does not tire of hearing them again and again. It has also helped to broaden his vocabulary. So happy Amazon had it in hardcover, the first time I looked for it, a few months back, I could only find paperback.

I was intrigued and amused to see another reviewer say her children were obsessed with "Scranimals" -- because that's the same reaction we got with our kid!

Jack Prelutsky evidently knows the secret of how to captivate children, especially when teamed up with illustrators like Peter Sis. Nearly every Prelutsky book that enters our home gets the same treatment: fascination, amusement, and above all, lots of reading and re-reading.

One might say that this is not Prelutsky's most ingenious work, since it's basically a single concept stretched out into a series of variations, not all of which are equally clever. But there's more to it than that. The illustrations are compelling and fun. And much of the poetry is more highly-crafted than one might expect, given the silly first impression the book makes.

A great example is the description of the "Bananaconda" (that word alone always makes ME laugh!) in which the author slathers syballant syllables in silly sequences. I took the opportunity to point out to our first-grader how a poet describes things differently than other kinds of writers.

I then read it aloud to demonstrate that point, sssimply by exsstending each of the esses on the page. At that point, most kids can make the connection between the sound of the words, and their understanding of "S" as the sound made by a snake -- something many of them learn in preschool, if not earlier.

And of course those words were written ABOUT a snake. The Florida Everglades is a unique network of subtropical wetlands that is now half its original size. The federal government has had a long history of involvement in the Everglades, beginning in the 1940s with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructing flood control projects that shunted water away from the Everglades. Many factors, including these flood control projects and agricultural and urban development, have contributed to the shrinking and altering of the wetlands ecosystem. Federal agencies began ecosystem restoration activities in the Everglades more than 15 years ago, but it was not until 2000 that Congress integrated the majority of restoration activities under an integrated plan, known as the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP).

The River of Grass acquisition is a proposed land acquisition by the State of Florida, which has the potential to affect the implementation of CERP. The proposal is to purchase tracts of land south of Lake Okeechobee from the U.S. Sugar Corporation. The state argues that the purchase would reduce phosphorus loads and help restore the historic north-south flow of water from Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades. Initially, acquisition of 187,000 acres was announced by Florida Governor Charlie Crist and subsequently approved by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) in December 2008. Since then, the original proposal has been downsized on multiple occasions, both in terms of the size of the purchase and the purchase price. Most recently, a revised land purchase agreement was announced and approved by the SFWMD in August 2010. SFWMD now proposes a direct cash purchase of 26,800 acres, or approximately 14% of the original purchase proposed by the governor in 2008. The purchase would cost SFWMD $197 million.

Questions have been raised regarding the proposed acquisition. Some of these questions center on potential positive and negative consequences of the land purchase agreement. These include the effectiveness of the land acquisition in reducing nutrient loads that are detrimental to the Everglades and in restoring historic flows, as well as the effect of the initiative’s funding requirements on Florida’s other restoration projects, including projects with a non-federal cost share requirement under CERP. Since state funding for CERP activities is expected to decline in the coming years, some have questioned whether the proposed funding for the land acquisition deal might be better spent on CERP projects.

The impact of the land acquisition on CERP and other Everglades restoration projects will depend in part on budgetary decisions to be made by the state in late September 2010, which could potentially reduce or delay state funding for some CERP projects. Near-term delays resulting from any funding reductions for CERP projects may be of interest to Congress, as they would affect the overall federal effort to restore the Everglades ecosystem under CERP.

An excellent introduction to Lie Theory

I'm no expert in Lie groups or Lie algebras, I didn't read any of that stuff in my M. Sc. Eng. Phys. so i decided to try Professor Stilwells book as an introduction to the subject. I am very glad that I bought this book. What Prof. Stilwell promises in the foreword is true - you can read and understand this book with a background of only calculus and linear algebra. The book introduces a lot of advanced concepts, but in a very clear and logic way - there is no problem for an undergraduate to comprehend the material. I guess the book is meant to be a school text book - it was a little hard for me to try to self-study some of the excercises, because there are no solutions provided. I like that every chapter starts with a preview to give an orientation of what will be presented in the chapter. Every chapter also ends with a discussion, which gives historical aspects of the presented theory, and some suggestions for further litterature on the various subjects. This is nice - it gives a wider perspective to the subject. I think this book is a very good stepping-stone on the reader's way from undergrad math to graduate topics, and I hope there will be more books of this kind.

terrible printing quality, mediocre binding

This review is about the print quality of the book I bought from Amazon, not about the written content.

Apparently now most (all?) Springer books bought via Amazon are printed on demand. It’s unclear whether the printing is done by Amazon or by Springer, but anyway, the quality of the copy I got was terrible. Somewhere between newsprint and a home inkjet printer set to “draft” mode.

I returned it, and bought a cheaper used copy from a British seller. That copy turned out to also be a printed-on-demand book, but printed in Germany, and much higher quality. Looks like it was printed on a laser printer. Still glued binding though.

For the price Springer/Amazon charges for math books, the quality is in my opinion scandalous. Might as well just download a PDF and print it yourself at the local copy shop.

Excellent read

An excellent read. In just 200 pages the author explains what Lie groups and algebras actually are. Most books on Lie theory are aimed at professional mathematicians, so begin with lots of topological and algebraic preliminaries and finally define a Lie group as a group that is also a manifold, or something similar. Stillwell begins with an example of the simplest Lie group, SO(2), as a group of rotations in the circle, then proceeds methodically to the next example SU(2), the first non-commutative Lie group. In short order all the other classical groups are discussed and, in chapter 5, the concepts of tangent space and Lie algebra are made clear through more examples. An undergraduate who has taken the calculus series, had a course in linear algebra that discusses matrices, has some knowledge of complex variables and some understanding of group theory should easily follow the material to this point. Topology, usually a graduate topic, is introduced later while showing which Lie groups are simply-connected, and how this is used to distinguish between similar Lie groups.

The material was clearly discussed and I found only a couple of typos. But I also found the use of the word vector and matrix for the same object in the same paragraph somewhat dis-quieting. Lastly, I would have liked to have seen some mention of Lie theory connections with modern physics.

Short, perfect, sweet! One spanking story you should read.

I received this book from the author to give an honest review.

I have read other books from this author and I enjoy those books, but this one she has greatly improved on so many levels. The characters are mature and likeable. The storyline goes together perfectly!

Leila was and still is a concertmaster of the Philharmonic Symphony, but she ended up hurting herself and so has now come to live with her close and best friend Carene.

While in Carene's care she has also taken on students that want to play the violin. Leila seems to not want to follow the doctors or Carene orders to help her get better. Which in turn she has to have some form of punishment! But with this punishment she finds she actually likes it and she finds a soft love for Carene. At times Lelia acts like a teenager with her non-listening ways, but it was not annoying like a teenager would be. Carene plays the part of a caring friend with feelings that arise later on, rather than someone forceful and mean which I really liked.

The story comes together perfectly! And you understand everything that was going on.

Simple gifts is a really cleverly written story, telling the love story of Leila and Carene, two childhood friends whose lives are entwined through a mutual love of music. What makes it such a clever story is that each of the chapter headings are named after prominent pieces of music that set the scene for following events.

Even if you aren’t aware of the interpretations of the music which introduces each chapter, there’s still a lot to enjoy in this book. As well as being a beautiful piece of lesfic, with characters who you can believe in and connect with, the book has the strong undertone of delicious kink which Anastasia writes so well. Kink and BDSM scenes are more than just a string of naughty words and punishment, they’re powerful, erotic and subtle on many levels. There’s the complexity of the relationship between the top and the bottom, with each’s reasons for playing their role to be explored and told, as well as lived by the reader. Set in a world a million miles away from the environment which Leila is used to, she seeds the control and mastery she is used to with her music and orchestra to Carene. Initially for the sake of her recovery following an injury, as the story develops, her reasons for submitting to the discipline Carene administers
becomes more complex, turning into an expression of love for her friend. But will Leila and Carene's feelings for each other blossom, or will Leila lose not just her potential soul mate, but also her friend ?

Often, when you’re faced with looking for a book to read, it can be an easy choice to go with a genre that you’re comfortable with. While there’s nothing wrong with that choice, this book is well worth considering as a choice. Reading simple gifts and enjoying it doesn’t make you a pervert, nor will it convert you to a spanking or BDSM lifestyle. Anastasias writing and passion for her subject is also worth more than calling it a simple guilty pleasure for when you’re feeling a bit “Kinky”. I really enjoyed this book, it appealed to me on many levels, both as a “girly girl” and as someone open to new things and would recommend without hesitation for your collection.

Great story!

I enjoyed this story very much. The playfulness between the characters a was light hearted and fun. I liked the teasing between them, the childhood stories, and how it was all woven together. My only complaint is that I didn't want it to end. I would love to see more of these two.
