Leo Beranek, an Iowa farm boy who became a Renaissance man--scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, musician, television executive, philanthropist, and author--has lived life in constant motion. His seventy-year career, through the most tumultuous and transformative years of the last century, has always been propelled by the sheer exhilaration of trying something new. In Riding The Waves, Leo Beranek tells his story. Beranek's life changed direction on a summer day in 1935 when he stopped to help a motorist with a flat tire. The driver just happened to be a former Harvard professor of engineering, who guided the young Beranek toward a full scholarship at Harvard's graduate school of engineering. Beranek went on to be one of the world's leading experts on acoustics. He became Director of Harvard's Electro-Acoustic Laboratory, where he invented the Hush-A-Phone--a telephone accessory that began the chain of regulatory challenges and lawsuits that led ultimately to the breakup of the Bell Telephone monopoly in the 1980s. Beranek moved to MIT to be a professor and Technical Director of its Acoustics Laboratory, then left academia to found the acoustical consulting firm Bolt, Beranek and Newman. Known for his work in noise control and concert acoustics, Beranek devised the world's largest muffler to quiet jet noise and served as acoustical consultant for concert halls around the world (including the Tanglewood Music Shed, the storied summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra). As president of BBN, he assembled the software group that invented both the ARPANET, the forerunner of the Internet, and e-mail. In the 1970s, Beranek risked his life savings to secure the license to operate a television station; he turned Channel 5 in Boston into one of the country's best, then sold it to Metromedia in 1982 for the highest price ever paid up to that time for a broadcast station. "One central lesson I've learned is the value of risk-taking and of moving on when risks turn into busts or odds look better elsewhere," Beranek writes. Riding The Waves is a testament to the boldness, diligence, and intelligence behind Beranek's lifetime of extraordinary achievement. Leo Beranek is a pioneer in acoustical research, known for his work in noise control and the acoustics of concert halls, and the author of twelve books on these topics. The many awards he has received include the Presidential National Medal of Science, presented in 2003.

A great story spoiled

Leo Beranek had a very interesting life and a fascinating story. It seems this work has been well-reviewed on the basis of his ground-breaking accomplishments. However his self-absorption is overwhelmingly evident. Regrettably, his all-about-me delivery is ultimately tedious, repetitive, and disappointing. My copy will be donated.

Inspiring book by a Genius

For anyone who is seriously into acoustics must seriously read this autobiography of one of the greatest acousticians. He will be 100 years old this month!!!

What an inspiring book especially for the starting acoustician who is grappling for projects. Mr Beranek shows his struggle throughout the years and points out that it aint going to be rosy all the time....hence riding with the waves.

The life of an American scientist/engineer/businessman

This book describes much of Leo Beranek's life (he continutes to contribute in his mid 90s)from his own point of view. It is particularly suggested for young people on the brink of a life in science, engineering or business. Beranek has had a sufficiently rich life in any one of these domains to satisfy most people. But, his crafty mid-western take on all three domains makes his story very special. He and his various activities has contributed to the lives of a great number of people. Most of these people know not his name or even his disciplines.

Later, others will write histories of some of the events about which Leo Beranek has written. Their outlooks will be different. Doubtless some will find some of what he did not to their liking. However, one gets the idea that at each turn in his life Beranek did not only what would be best for society and for his family. This is the sort of story Americans could read more often.

Leonardo da Vinci is recognized as the quintessential Renaissance Man. A great painter, he was equally prodigious in the fields of architecture, engineering, anatomy, and physical science.

H. Anna Suh has a master's degree in art and archaeology from Princeton University. She was on the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and has worked on projects for scholarly publications at the Met, New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, the Princeton University Art Museum, and Harvard University. She lives in New York City.

A Sensitively Tailored Version of the da Vinci Notebooks

Though there are other publications that include the entire series of notebooks maintained as a diary of thoughts and concepts, puzzles, dreams and creative ideas by the great Leonardo da Vinci, this publication under the astute editorship of H. Anna Suh condenses the notebooks, focusing on most of the truly profound writings of the artist. The quality of production in transposing old paper to new is excellent with respectful use of sepia tone and black and white reproductions that make the book eminently readable.

da Vinci's Notebooks contain some of the more far-reaching thinking of his day, ideas about flight, acoustics, astronomy, and architecture that weren't completely realized for centuries after his death. These are the notes of a genuine genius, a man who not only understood his art but also understood anatomy on a scientific level far beyond the scientists of his time.

But all of this is merely fact and information we have all known for a long time. The reason for recommending this particular volume is the quality of illustration control, the footnotes, the capable translations of da Vinci's notes, and the generous manner in which the material is laid out on the page. This is not only, then, an important book exploring da Vinci's history and mind, it is also an homage to the master's drawing, philosophy, and genteel brain that dared to explore areas of thought long before others attempted. Of all the versions of the da Vinci Notebooks, this is the most artistically sound and readable. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 05

Yet another unfortunate truncation of Leonardo's notebooks

It is possible, with only a few pages from Leonardo Da Vinci's many notebooks, to do away with all other books on the subject of information design. In this way, if you plan to "learn so you can practice," this book or any other book on Leonardo's notebooks will not only be sufficient but will outclass everything else.

If you want a book specifically about Leonardo's notebooks, however, this book is all-too truncated. There simply aren't enough representations of his work to really "dig in" and see how he was able to cross intellectual barriers while retaining the same perspective. You'll get a handful of examples, and if you bought any of dozen or so similar books you'll mostly see the same examples repeated in each one.

My recommendation to anyone wanting a semi-thorough collection (for no full collection exists to my knowledge) is to hunt around your local antique and used book stores. I was able to acquire a massive volume of Leonardo's works, called simply Leonardo Da Vinci (published in 1956 by Reynal & Company) which has around 1,500 examples of notebook pages and various sketches along with essays and descriptions in each of the major fields (human and animal anatomy and physiology, warfare, engineering, structures, and more). It cost about twice as much as a modern collection (such as this one) and is many, many times more thorough. I only wish such thoroughness was more readily available and didn't require months of searching.

In all, this book (which I gifted to a friend who didn't ask as much of it as I did) is worthwhile if you only need a glance at Leonardo's notebooks. If you want to take a good look, you'll need to do so elsewhere.

Terrible, disappointing at best

I bought this for the Kindle app on my iPad 3 device expecting to see the illustrations I saw in the soft cover book I found with the same name at a museum store. What I expected and what I received are two different things. None of the cool diagrams in the printed book are present in this version of the book for the Kindle app on the iPad. It's really a false statement to say this kindle book is illustrated.

My new best friend in my purse

I finished reading the book, the vicious cycle, and it REALLY helped me get my diet started. I am not a cook and this new way of planning had me sooo confused. I lived on slices of cheese, eggs, bell peppers and almond butter in Tupperware. This I could handle. Now I carry my book in my purse, so I am never without it. I use the "legal list of foods" for everything I buy. Just yesterday, I was buying garlic and was trying to choose paste, fresh, or whole. I checked the ingredients in paste and found citric acid and soyoil. I checked my book and no soy products allowed. Saves me a lot of stress. Buy the paperback as it is small and light and easy to carry all the time. As far as the actual reading of the book material. I understood a lot of it and that was helpful. Some of it was just way over my head. I think it is ok to skim over the whys of molecules, etc.I could not find this on ebook for the ipad, only the kindle. Kind of glad though as it is easier to grab the book than bring it all up for an ebook.

Great cookbook.

Fabulous!!! Makes it easy and delicious, and broadens our menu. Makes the SCD protocol more fun and "normal" too. Nice large print, with some encouraging photos too. The SCD diet has made a gigantic difference in our son's gut health and brain fog.

Very rarely do I find many recipes in one book that I really use. This one was an exception. I have made so many of the recipes and they are so easy to make. Highly recommended book.

I love this book for several reasons

Another gem from James Alexander!!! I love this book for several reasons.
Most obviously, the vocab included. Some of the other books were missing a couple of my favorite four letter word combos, and this one covered all of them, and then some. A delightful surprise was seeing 'Bye Felicia'! Not a four letter insult, but perfectly current and fun. I enjoy seeing some of the British combos, expanding my colorful insult horizons is always nice.
Next thing I love: the paper. I cannot stress enough how much I love his black paper. It's thicker and almost velvety feeling, now the back side of the pages are speckled, and makes me think of the night sky with stars. Pretty and soothing. I didn't think his plain black paper could get any better and here he goes one upping himself.
And lastly, the designs to color around the words are nice. Simple, and not overly detailed, but in a good way. Some books are so detailed you have to use ultra fine tips or just pencils. I prefer the vibrant look of marker, personally, and my regular fine tips are often not fine enough for some of those crazy detailed books. Also, I don't have to get out a spot light and magnifying glass to color in these books... which is ideal. I don't find it relaxing to be straining to see what I'm coloring and stressing about possibly coloring out of the lines. So much more relaxing to be able to color without the grade school anxiety of accidentally coloring outside the lines.
Oh, and hey, Christmas is coming up, and any number of other holidays and birthdays, these make great gifts.
So bravo Mr. Alexander! You have proven yourself, yet again. Keep the books coming! I will keep buying them, and spreading the word to everyone who sees them and wants one!

PERFECTION!

I am SO excited to have another James Alexander coloring book! This book has 59 different designs that feature some creative vulgar phrases. Each page is trimmed in black with white speckles which really helps the designs pop. Each phrase is surrounded by fun geometric and floral designs which are so fun to color.

The quality of the book is great. It has nice pages and crisp lines. Perfect for any coloring medium of choice: markers, pencils, etc. Some helpful coloring tips are in the front. In addition to the 59 geometric designs, 9 doodle designs are included which include cute little critters and monsters. You also receive two links for bonus designs to print for both the geometric and doodle designs. Such a great value and amazing work – get this book!

He is too open about his own flaws and failings for the words to be anything other than the truth. And his candor is perfectly complemented by a wry wit that spices his stories perfectly.

Tales of the Chisholm Trail and of Billy the Kid are highlights of the book, but it is Siringo’s earliest years—before he became a cowboy (or Cow-boy, as he originally put it) that may be the most compelling. In all, his story is so full of excitement that something as remarkable as the Indianola Hurricane of 1875 receives little attention—even though Siringo spent the night in water up to his neck. It’s a Texas must-read.

Cowboy memoir classic. . .

At the age of 28, when he wrote his memoir, Charles Siringo had already been a cowboy for 15 years. Born in 1855 on the Gulf Coast of Texas, Siringo worked in one job after another across the Midwest and Southwest, ranging from St. Louis to New Mexico. Still a teenager, he settled on cowboying at the time of the great cattle drives and was apparently very good at it, though no luckier than most at making a living from it. He worked for many years for the LX ranch in the Texas Panhandle, for a while rounding up cattle that had drifted away or were stolen. This occupation put him in New Mexico at the time of Billy the Kid, who was four years his junior. He never met Billy but knew men who did, and his imagination seems to have been fired by the stories they told about the pursuit and eventual shooting of this young outlaw. Though by his own account Siringo never shot a man himself, he was a dead aim with a six-shooter.
His memoir was written, as he admits in his preface, to make money "and lots of it." It's not great literature, beginning with his earliest childhood memories and recounting the events of his life with no particular sense of compelling storytelling. It's just one darn thing after another. But a reader with some patience will be rewarded in the latter part of the book as his adventures begin adding up to something like a real narrative - working for the LX as a range detective - and he begins emerging as more of a coherent protagonist in his own story.
And it's not all about the work of cowboying, herding and rounding up cattle, and taking them to market. There are some close scrapes and some fearless derring-do. And there are also matters of the heart, as the young cowboy falls in love with a string of sweethearts he meets along the way, finally marrying one he meets in Kansas and ending his career as a cowboy. I'm happy to recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Wild West, cowboys, ranching in the days of the open ranges, and social history of the late 19th century. [The 1950 edition is worth having for the wonderful introduction by Texas folklorist J. Frank Dobie.]

One of Dobie's Favorites

The most authentic book ever written about the Texas cowboy. J. Frank Dobie said that "no record of cowboy life has supplanted this rollicky, reckless, realistic chronicle" and that it is "the most-real, non-fiction book on cowboy life." Siringo worked as a cowboy for Shanghai Pearce, rode with a posse of Texas cowboys to New Mexico to track down Billy the Kid and took part in numerous cattle drives. A Texas history classic.

Great book!!

This book is by and about a real cowboy -- not a Clint Eastwood or John Wayne type -- but a true to life cowboy.
Charlie Siringo punched cattle. His brush with history? He joined in the chase for Billy the Kid. He never saw the outlaw, but it was just one more of many things this average cowpoke did and wrote about.
Reading this book gives a person a feel of what it was REALLY like to live and work as a cowboy in Texas.

Written to entertain........Variety of topics to enjoy

Wish You Were Here is a collection of short stories, letters, and poems. It becomes a little confusing that it jumps around a lot, but if you just read one at a time, it becomes much more enjoyable. I don't think that the book was made to be read in one sitting.

Regardless, the stories are very interesting and entertaining. This is a clear demonstration of the random thoughts and stories that a person can experience. Some of the stories were serious, some were fantasy, and some were funny. Brock did a great job in getting emotion in written form.

GREAT READ.

Honestly couldn't put down the book (even though I had tests to study for)! Super fan of the short story type writing, but I got super connected to the characters and kept wanting more. Hopefully the author will make a full version of some of the stories because I must know more. Ultimate great read, and totally affordable. P.S. support new authors!
