Great Web development book for the beginner and intermidiate user

Hi,

I work as an ISP development staff member and from time to time write monitoring tools for our support team.

I wanted to start learning php in order to add some web interfaces to our tools.

I have found this book a very good book for the php/mysql beginner like me, great for the fact that it deals also with the installation part and even gives you all the php modules/commands you can use.

the interaction with mysql is also great from the begining and you start develop your skills using these 2 great tools.

one thing I would like to see is interaction with the system, with the exec commands for example.

beside that, this book is great.

Excellent Book

In the first few pages of this book, the new user of PHP, Apache, MySQL for web development gets a fast track into getting a server up and running fast, took me about 30 minutes. The remainder of the book is an excellent reference, with step by step howtos. This book brings the difficulty of getting a webserver running down to a level that brings success.

Great Book for the Time -- Needs Revisions and Updates

I would truly love to give this book 5 stars; however, as some of the more recent commentators have indicated, it's out of date. Unfortunately, that's a show stopper when you're using the most recent version of MySQL! I was going over this book as a refresher course, since I have been generally well satisfied with Wrox's books, but the outdated syntax in the MySQL sections are real deal-killers. It's been years since I touched PHP, so I figured I could pick this up and get back into the groove of things and truly get into MySQL at the same time -- no dice on that one.

In short, this book is largely handicapped by two things:

1. It needs to be revamped for the latest version of MySQL and PHP (6 is right around the corner), and
2. The errata section on the website needs to point some of these things out.

I'm giving it four-out-of-five stars because it would have been a righteous book in 2005.

About the Author
David L. Hough is a longtime motorcyclist and journalist who has traveled extensively by motorcycle throughout North America and Europe. David’s daily motorcycle commutes through city traffic for twenty-five years led him to write articles about riding skills and accident avoidance tactics. His work has appeared in numerous motorcycle publications, but he is best known for the monthly skills series “Proficient Motorcycling” in Motorcycle Consumer News, which has been honored by special awards from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

David has been employed professionally as a technical illustrator, photographer, and instructional graphics specialist, so it is natural that his articles are profusely illustrated by photos and drawings, all of which he creates himself.

In his spare time, David has produced the world’s first comprehensive training system for sidecar operators. Hough Does It Again

David Hough provides valuable information to get your head into your ride and anticipate and avoid potential problems / crashes. He brings a lifetime (45 years +) of riding experience and 100s of 1,000s of miles of mc riding on several continents, years of writing mc safety columns, etc, to bear on the advice given. His advice is for both new and experienced riders. I have all his books and recommend reading them all. His unique clues of what to look for in actual / anticipated situations, behavior under all traffic and weather conditions is invaluable. And supported by independent reports, statistics, graphs, pictures / photos, including his own as a past illustrator at Boeing; and recommendations on alternative courses and resources. I found all his books to be easy reads, which is good considering that a rider should re-read them periodically to refine good habits and continually work at getting rid of bad habits. Wish I had these resources in the mid '60's when I started riding in CA. He is one of the first writers to discuss the myth of multitasking while driving (us and other motorists), which the most recent studies support (the majority of us c/n multitask when tested objectively). Reading his books provides anlysis of far more riding situations than most of us individually face in several years riding, and could cause us to avoid an unusual life-threatening situation if it presents itself. This book seems to get a little more into the psychology of others on the road and clues to watch for. I recommend all his books as well as Lee Parks's and Keith Code's.

This book starts where the last book of David L. Hough (Proficient Motorcycling) have stopped,
plus addresses some advanced skills, and tactics for road and street. Every conscious rider must buy some book of this level, way before the purchase of fancy items (like special dampers and mechanical stuff).
This book and the previous from Mr. Hough are in my top list of security items,
way before anything else in my motorcycle, for incredible low prices compared with mechanical
add-ons, and with the irreplaceable thing that must be in the most vital part of the motorcycle: the head of the rider.
Dont forget to check the books from Lee Parks and Keith Code, cause their works complement the necessary job to understand security and performance, all needed by us riders.

Not a dentist by profession but a humorist, Wynbrandt brings an irreverent approach to the seemingly colorless topic of dentistry. All the names and dates of important discoveries and advances in dental practice are here, but they are delivered along with an endless supply of tales ranging from the comical to the macabre. From the almost universal belief in "tooth worms" as the cause of cavities to "spirits and demons as agents of infirmity," superstitions and folk remedies throughout the world are thoroughly covered. Admitting that dentistry has historically been the domain of "incompetents, ignoramuses, quacks, and charlatans," Wynbrandt creates vivid images of medieval marketplace hucksters and "barber-surgeons" who advertised by displaying buckets of blood in their windows. Even as dentistry slowly moved into the realm of legitimate medicine, its trial-and-error practice included the use of leeches, bloodletting, urine mouthwashes, poisonous and highly addictive painkillers (including morphine and cocaine) and deadly radiation. Wynbrandt makes his point well that "we are fortunate to live in the golden era of 'painless' dentistry," and indeed "a dentally pampered culture" in which cosmetic concerns have all but overtaken the practice. This is an exhaustive, entertaining history that is likely to appeal mostly to... dentists. Eight pages of b&w illustrations, not seen by PW.

The history of dentistry is a subject not well known to patients who dread their semiannual visit. They may not realize that the temporary discomfort they face is negligible compared with the pain and distress endured by patients of previous eras. The author reports that at times dental treatments were more bloody and barbarous than beneficial. He discusses the development of dentistry as a profession, the use of different anesthetics, and the evolution of dentures and dental prosthetics, among other topics. Much of the book is devoted to anecdotes illustrating discontinued dental practices. Wynbrandt thoroughly researched this topic, but it is not likely to be of interest to the average reader. A breezy romp through the history of dentistry that will be excruciating only for those pained by word play, especially puns. Comedy writer Wynbrandt has fun with this one, but he has filled it with facts, too. He covers the world of tooth care from the Babylonians of 5000 b.c., worms and devils and treated them with henbane and prayer, to today's film stars with their dentist-crafted perfect smiles. Here one learns of the dental glory that was Rome (the first cavity is said to have been filled in the first century a.d.), the itinerant tooth-drawers of the Middle Ages and later eras. (``Not all tooth-drawers were crooks and deceivers. Some were merely incompetent.''), the beginnings of the modern dental era in 18th-century France, and the profession's 19th-century efforts to rid itself of quacks and charlatans (the world's first dental college opened in 1840). Wynbrandt wittily chronicles the development of anesthetics, fluoride, X-rays, drills, dental chairs, and even toothpicks. George Washington's famous false teeth are, of course, discussed; so is Ulysses S. Grant's dental work and George Custer's last toothbrush. Folklore, myth, religion, movies, poetry, and advertisements--all are tapped by Wynbrandt, who quotes liberally from a variety of contemporary sources to bring his light-hearted history to life. While sensitive dentists may wince at having their profession's rough-and-tumble past revealed, dental patients are more likely to feel relief at having been born in the modern era of dentistry. Ouch! Oh, Please Stop! I'm Dying! - A History of Dental PAIN!

This is probably a book that will only appeal to people in the dental profession, historians, and sadomasochists. The author does a nice job of describing the excruciatingly painful history of dentistry. With the advent of processed sugar (first extracted from sugar cane grown in the Caribbean Islands), and then transported worldwide, the so-called western sugar diet promoted tooth decay never seen before in human history. A high sugar diet with inadequate oral hygiene led to untold pain and suffering that is worthy of a notation in human history. This book explains the state of dentistry from the beginning of recorded civilization to the present. It is fascinating reading for someone interested in this topic. This book is certainly written for a target audience, but it can make an interesting "coffee-table" book that is certain to "extract" much conversation. Kone

At times horrifying, humorous, and fascinating, this book is an interesting read for everyone. This was a great gift for my friend who is going through dentistry school right now. She said that much of it was illuminating and made her even more interested in her specialization, even while I was at times cringing away from the gut-wrenching nature of some of the history!

Beautifully illustrated and masterfully researched the book is a must have for everyone interested in the Ganges River, Uttar Pradesh, India, rivers, and urbanization at large.

Disappointing read

I really liked the first book and but this one was terrible. Main characters were inconsistent and unsympathetic. Grammar and spelling mistakes are frequent. Very disappointing follow up to the fabulous Zombie Island.

Spoiler alert:
A major reason why this book was so disappointing is that at the end, the characters are leaving their safe haven because they have been told there is a "cure" and they're going to search for it. The zombies are described as dead and decaying with limbs and organs missing yet a cure can reverse all of that? I'm all for suspension of disbelief, I mean these are zombie stories after all, but come on!

This book has lots of zombie action. It has a good story line and I like the characters. Now that the two cousin's are together and headed for Montana I think the series will only get better. There is a small amount of romance but this book is definitely not a live story.
I would recommend this series to zombie lovers.
I just hope the next book doesn't take as long as this one did to be released.

The Best Zombie Series...

I started reading this series for free on the website/app called Wattpad. I finished the first book on there but when I started the second story I found out that it was only a preview and I would have to purchase the rest of the series. At first I was upset, thinking "WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!" But then I thought, that since Samantha is such an amazingly gifted writer it would make since she wants to a little income off of her stories, especially because it's a wonderfully entertaining storyline.

If you're afraid your money won't be well spent, you're wrong. The story isn't dragging on the action, with boring descriptions and repetitive wording. It is fast paced, but not in such a way where you're like, "wtf so many things are happening at once?". Samantha is an incredible author. You get to know the characters you're reading about and you feel what they feel and you know what they are about, and that they're all unique little snowflakes.

To be honest I'm not usually one to write reviews. But this series is by far better than any paranormal romance. If you're thinking it's another Twilight book series you're dead wrong again. It's so much more thought out and relatable, it's the kind of story you sit down to read and finish that same day, in the same sitting. If I could nominate this series to make movies I would.

Samantha, I love you and your writing, and I hope your passion for writing never ends. You're the most talented author in history and your ideas are true to you, being as unique and awesome as humanly possible. Keep doing what you're doing, I know you're going to make it far.

About the Author
Michael Minot is a former atheist who became convinced of the claims of Christianity as a result of an investigation he performed concerning matters of science and the Scriptures. Since his conversion, Michael has dedicated his life to sharing the truth he discovered and encourages people with his perspective of life as a former atheist.

Michael has appeared on television and radio shows as well as been the guest speaker at high schools, universities, and churches throughout the country. Originally from Melbourne, FL, Michael is an author, speaker, and attorney who now lives in Colorado Springs, CO with his wife, Nichole and four of their five children.

Go Inside the Mind of an Educated, Successful, Atheist Attorney Turned Christian

Confident and sometimes outspoken about his atheistic views, Michael was taken back when he received a call from his old friend Jim who challenged him to revisit his attitude about life. What Michael discovered over the next few months and the surprising outcome to his investigation is revealed in his excellent new book.

As Christians, we’re encouraged each time we hear about the dramatic conversion of an educated atheist. Charles Colson comes to mind. Michael’s intensely personal story fits that category. But it has two important twists making his story truly unique. First, Michael was not at the bottom of life when he explored matters of belief. In fact, he felt he was at the top – reaping the rewards of his law career, which provided money in his pocket and the keys to a new convertible.

Secondly, and probably the most unusual aspect of Michael’s story, is how he performed his investigation. Refusing to be talked into anything, he was determined to plot his course through this unknown territory entirely on his own. In the end, Michael concludes this worked for his benefit. He writes: “If someone had led me through the process, I might not have encountered the depth and richness of the facts that became so persuasive. Chasing down all the leads and going where each one led brought me to the large body of evidence that cornered me in the end.”

I’ve read many books written from various angles that provide support for the Christian faith. But none explore those truths from the perspective of an atheist’s mind in quite this way. In The Beckoning, Michael shows how God uses many different “messengers” to bring people to belief. Each chapter addresses Michael’s approach to these various subjects. Michael begins many of his chapters by explaining his atheist mindset as to that topic using personal experiences to illustrate those views. He then tells us what he learned and how he grappled with the information he discovered from science, philosophy, and the Bible.

It’s Michael’s description of the raw inner-workings of his atheist mindset and what happened when he encountered the evidence he never before considered that I found most unusual and intriguing. Because Michael undertook this investigation without any assistance, his mind was not influenced or clouded by any particular Christian philosophy or tradition. Indeed, he had very little understanding about the details of Christian belief. In light of that, how he works through the issues in each of the chapters is truly fascinating and fresh. In numerous ways, Michael’s perspective on the truths he discovered are perspectives I’ve never heard stated quite the same way. It reminds me of how we can look at something over and over and not see what’s clear to a child when they observe that same situation for the first time.

I highly recommend The Beckoning to everyone. Whether you’re a student with questions, a life-long believer, or a doubter, Michael’s intriguing book will challenge your preconceptions and give you much to think about. Although this book is an absolute page-turner, if you’re like me, you’ll often pause to look up and think through the depth of what you just read.

Journey to Belief

The premise of this book dramatically intrigued me. Its author, Michael Minot, reveals how his life irreversibly changed from complete rejection of God, Jesus, Christianity and religion to totally embracing faith in God’s truth.

This skeptical, atheist attorney, with his typically lawyer-like analytical mind and process, accepted a challenge from an old friend to read the Scriptures for himself and see how they might help him reevaluate his life in terms of purpose and meaning.

The author’s investigation and diligent study transformed him into a solid believer. Seeing God’s creation plans and how they personally affected him, Michael Minot found reality, joy and a new life.

In reading the details of his investigative journey, I was especially touched by his reference to the amazing design of our bodies. It made me aware of the countless aspects of creation that we take for granted. For instance, Minot pointed out the incredible phenomenon of sleep. Think about this! Our bodies were constructed to go to sleep, wake up, re-engage and be conscious of our surroundings and memories, resuming where we left off prior to our hours of slumber.

The author was also blown away by considering our biological complexity--that every cell, every organ in our bodies has a connecting position and role to perform. Did this just somehow evolve? Similarly, he points out that cosmology emphasizes the precision and intricacy of our entire solar system. Did that just sort of materialize on its own? Plants, animals, people, nature. What was the beginning? Scripture tells us.

The Beckoning is a book for doubters, as well as believers. A walk though Michael Minot’s journey can mightily strengthen the faith of Christians. The doubters will be compelled to digest the information and make a now-educated choice.

Perfect for believers and the "unchurched"

Part of what I do as a senior pastor is point people in the direction of resources that can help them. One of the situations I’ve experienced difficulty with over the years is when someone posses questions about the underlying proofs for the Christian faith. Outside of my conversations with them, I sometimes have a difficult time recommending good outside material for them to read. My experience is that books written on these topics tend to be written in a scholarly fashion using language unique to apologetic “experts.” Most people are relegated to understanding only bits and pieces and sometimes getting more confused and discouraged in the process.

That’s why I’m so excited about Michael’s new book The Beckoning: Examining The Truths That Transformed An Atheist Attorney Into A Believer In God. More than any other book I’ve read, I felt that instead of reading a book I was having a conversation with Michael at a coffee shop. Clear, precise, yet easily to follow and comprehend, this is a personal story that everyone can easily follow and relate to.

Michaels’s perspective of what he learned while investigating the Christian faith is truly unique. Without background or training in Christian topics, his personal stories and manner of investigating the issues comes from the perspective of an outsider to the church. Not only is this refreshing but how Michael communicates what occurred during his investigation is just what I believe people need. His honesty and transparency concerning difficult issues is refreshing and disarming.

In addition to believers asking for material to help them strengthen their faith, I often struggle with what to give people who’ve never known God. I want to help them find their way home to Christ. I know after speaking with them I probably have one chance to give them something that will be persuasive, understandable, and hold their attention. The Beckoning is the gift I’ll be giving them.

After ordering copies for many of my friends, I’m also encouraging all our home groups study The Beckoning. The questions at the end of each chapter and the free introductory chapter videos available on Michael’s website make it a perfect study for groups or for individuals reading the book.

The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic strips created by Belgian artist Herge the pen name of Georges Remi (1907 1983). The series first appeared in French in Le Petit Vingtieme, a children's supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle on 10 January 1929. Set in a painstakingly researched world closely mirroring our own, Herge's Tintin series continues to be a favorite of readers and critics alike 80 years later.
The hero of the series is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter. He is aided in his adventures from the beginning by his faithful fox terrier dog Snowy (Milou in French). Later, popular additions to the cast included the brash, cynical and grumpy Captain Haddock, the bright but hearing-impaired Professor Calculus (Professeur Tournesol) and other colorful supporting characters such as the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond et Dupont). Herge himself features in several of the comics as a background character; as do his assistants in some instances.
The success of the series saw the serialized strips collected into a series of albums (24 in all), spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
The comic strip series has long been admired for its clean, expressive drawings in Herge's signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a variety of genres: swashbuckling adventures with elements of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. The stories within the Tintin series always feature slapstick humor, accompanied in later albums by sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary.
