A collection of common sense ideas that are not that common

This book is a collection of common sense ideas but common sense is not that common. This book presents 7 key ideas and provides examples of how to apply these ideas in the real world:

Primacy principle - people remember more of the first things they hear or see. The brain remembers better things from the beginning of a learning period.

Recency principle - we remember more of the last things we see or hear. The The brain remembers better things from the end of a learning period.

The Von Restorff/Imagination Effect - the brain remembers things that stand out during the learning period. Multisensory images are great.

The Association Effect- we remember whatever is linked or connected, especially to ourselves and our own worlds.

The Understanding and Misunderstanding Effect - it is possible to remember accurately that which never happened. This relates to the brain's phenomenal ability to imagine, daydream, create and associate.

The Interest Effect - if you are interested, all Learning, Thinking, Memory and Creativity improve in one immediate, giant leap.

The How Mind Mapping Can Change Your Life Book
By 60+ and still having fun
This book goes far beyond the earlier mind mapping books by Mr Buzan and puts the work into the context of using the technique to improve many different areas of your life at different stages in development. This is not a psychology book (although it sometimes strays a little into my field) but it is a great set of tools with great relevance for influencing development as you learn to use visual thinking and non-linear methods to see the world somewhat differently. The exposition of the assumptions and the methodology is quite readable and admirably concise. Highly recommended. Good advise but not very practical.

I gave this book a 3.5 because it satisfied the reason why i bought it, it improved my memory. However, i removed a star because some of the techniques in this book are less then practical. I suppose if you want to be a memory champion you could apply all the techniques in this book all the time but otherwise you'd be kinda silly to be constantly associating old information with new information is strange ways in an attempt never to forget anything. That's another reason why i removed a star, i just summed the entire book up in on sentence; associate old information with new information in strange way frequently. I guess that requires some explanation but anything that simple shouldn't cost so much.

I didn't give this book 5 stars bcz unfortunately it does not cover a lot of dreams. You can dream lots of things & not find it in this book. Still there is enough you can find to still purchase it. I gave it a high rating bcz 1. It is a very simple & quick book 2. It is Nostradamus! My number 2 reason makes me think that this is the best dream book out there bcz, even though you might not find every word or dream in it, the meanings have to be accurate bcz it's the great Nostradamus.

About the Author
Born in Hong Kong in 1941, Paul Eng began studying Kungfu at age 6 and has been teaching it since 1960. He has studied a range of Kungfu systems, specializing in Seven Star Praying Mantis. He has taught in New York, in Vietnam, while serving in the US Army, and in California, where he currently has a Kungfu school.

Nice book, I have been studying choy lay fut kung fu for about 4 months and this was a great primer before my first class. Made me understand so I did not have to ask so many questions, and I truly think it accelerated my learning!

Paul Eng has written a great introductory book to kungfu. His tone is very encouraging and his writing is informative but never dry. The guy loves kungfu and that's apparent from the first paragraph. He lays down all the basic information you could ever want to know to get you ready for your first kungfu class. Some of the chapter titles include:

Mr. Eng has earned some imrpessive credentials.He's studied Choi Li Fut, TaiChi Mantis, Seven Star Mantis, Fu Jow Pai ( Tiger Claw stle) and Tai Chi among others. He's been teaching kungfu snce 1960 and has taught tai chi chuan at the Kaiser Hospital Physical Therapy Department as well as served as Chief Instructor of the "Red Catcher" Combat Ranger training camp in Viet Nam during the war. If you listen to his advice your kungfu studies will be both more fruitful and more enjoyable.

Well written and illustrated for understanding the basics of gung fu. Sometimes in class you may not pick up the subtle differences in foot position or receive conflicting advice on what the proper stance is. This book will help in sorting out the basics. The author also does a good job of referring the reader back to their instructor when a position is interpreted differently by various styles.

Good reference, Seems to have almost every car ever made!

This is a good reference book for that auto that you are thinking about buying/investing in. Its not going to provide you with overly specific details other than production numbers, engine options, price when new, and things like that. The "pros and cons" I think is fairly useless (especially since a lot of the "cons" are "high gas consumption"....come on who's using any of these for a daily driver?!?!" There aren't really any color pictures other than a few sections of full page (and random) pictures, but that's not really the point of this book. It is more of a reference than anything else. But it's a very good reference.

A must-have for car enthusiasts

If you have ever asked yourself questions like: What did the grille look like on a '50 Ford compared to a '51? or When did they bring our the E-type Jag? or What is a '56 Dodge LaFemme? or What the heck is a 1930 Ruxton?
If you have any interest in cars of the past, this book is a must-have! It features not just American-made cars but most European makes such as Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Ferrari, MG, Mercedes, etc. It has pictures of most and details of the model's history, engines, production, and prices in 1992 dollars (that's when the hardcover book was published). The prices are relevant, though, in that you car see how a particular car compared to another at that time.
I highly recommend this book as a source of automobilia history. Never have I seen a concentration of auto info in one publication. Remember, we'll never see them built like that again!

Ryan’s ready to get back to work as an unpaid laborer, and Jamie’s just as
eager to return to her life of leisure. Two people could hardly have more
diverse definitions of “taking time off.” Given that Ryan’s always got a few
irons in the fire, it’s no surprise she’s ready to take aggressive action to flush
away the vestiges of the carjacking. Whether she can do that by force of will
is another question that awaits an answer.

Now that Mia and Jordan are back in Berkeley, they have to get their
own routine going. Mia’s certain she can find a lucrative career with her
American Studies degree in her clutches, but Jordan’s resigned to low wages
and a bad schedule while she finishes up her degree. While they’re both very
thankful to be back home, closeness simply gives Mia and Anna Lisa more
opportunities to drive each other crazy—something they’re both masters at.

The O’Flaherty Cousins construction project is rolling along at a good
clip. But the boyos have put in a tremendous amount of work, giving up every
weekend to complete the task. Now it’s decision time again. Will the rewards
make up for the sacrifices?

About the Author

Vidar Lerum is an Associate Professor at the Illinois School of Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA. He teaches design studios and design seminars at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His teaching experience includes design studios exploring the path to net zero energy building design, design seminars addressing minimalism in the age of conspicuous consumption, and environmental control systems courses. Lerum's research focuses on energy performance, human comfort and user satisfaction in buildings. He is a licensed architect in Norway and a member of the Norwegian Society of Architects (NAL). He is also a Co-opted Committee Member of the CIBSE Heritage Group and an International Associate member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
