Lots of good information among all the baggage

The reason I bought this book was two-fold: first and foremost, I just wanted to learn more about Server 2012 R2, and secondly, I'm using it to study for the MCSA Server 2012 R2. I'll try to remember to update this review when I actually take the test later this year.

I've spent a lot of time staring at the various pages of this book and I have to say that there is decent amount of good information, but you have to sit through a long winded writer who brings a lot of baggage with him.

Pros:
-Lots of information
-Organized neatly
-Written out steps that are easy to follow along
-Pictures, diagrams, and tables where necessary
-Loaded with examples, even a few minor PowerShell scripts

Cons:
-Long (and only the first volume... *sigh*)
-Every time Stanek mentions 'left click' or 'right click' or 'double click' (etc.) he says 'left click or tap' or 'right click or tap and hold' or 'double click or double tap' even though he explains the touch interface in the introduction (yes I actually read the introduction, and no that doesn't happen often)
-A lot of outdated methods are recommended by this book, Stanek has clearly been in the Windows Server world for a long time, but since I read the introduction, I already knew that. An example: The book describes the Disk Management MMC snapin as deprecated and that Storage Spaces or PowerShell should be used instead. Well, later in the book, when he talks about disk and volume management, he describes everything in the Disk Management MMC snapin (which is also a bit contradictory as well).
-Disappointingly little PowerShell or talk on configuring a Core server

After reading the above, you might be wondering why I didn't give it one or two stars? Well, I got a lot of good information out of this book that I wouldn't have known otherwise. Its one thing to use a server OS everyday, but to actually study it brings a whole lot of options onto the table.

TL;DR: Lots of good information among all the baggage, not enough PowerShell in my opinion.

Awesome book!

All of William Stanek's Windows Server resources are exceptional. Books that are so well written, with depth, that are easy to understand are a rare combination with IT resources.

As a longtime tech and now a trainer, I recommend this resource and any of the author's other books to my co-workers, students and fellow trainers. His books are the only ones I buy two print copies of: one for home and one for the office. Both get read, dog-eared and sticky notes all over them.

Not for boys you want to raise properly.

Not for boys you want to raise properly. Should have returned it. Too much stuff in it that I totally disapprove of, and would never want my grandson to be subjected to at 9 years of age. Even at 12 or 13....It is really an unkind book. Even my son disapproved, and that is saying something.

Not like the Big book of Girls

I bought it thinking that it was going to be like "The Big Book of Girls", which has plenty of advice, interesting topics and empowers girls. This book is nothing like that. I guess you can find "advice" (like how to insult someone else), there are plenty bad jokes, unimportant topics, poor language, and does not help boys the way the other book does. A good thing is that there are experiments, outdoor activities, and a list of books. My son liked it, but I was hoping for better content.
