If you are interested to know about magick, this book is a good one to read. Practice of magick can help us improve our focus and motivation and invite positivity in our lives. About the Author
Colin Kendell became a professional genealogist in 1988 and has been able to combine research into the Ripper murders with my work. He had several articles published in the now defunct "Criminologist" magazine, including one suggesting that the badly disfigured woman found dead in the room of the final victim Mary Kelly was not actually her. Other authors have since taken up that idea. He conducts the occasional "Ripper Walk" around Whitechapel. He also has had a lifelong interest in Puccini. He took Puccini as his specialist subject in the Mastermind semi-final in 1995. He lives in Middlesex.

Good read with interesting ideas, but the author doesn't entirely make it work.

This is a short, easy read, which is good. I get turned off by pretentious & complex mumbo jumbo theories, but it is a straight forward read here. The first few chapters deal with the victims, & the information we already know.

The author though, uses some of Stephen Knight's theories to support his. Knight has been debunked, & is commonly viewed as a joke. Another problem I have is that Kendall sometimes dismisses witnesses as being wrong, but doesn't really provide any adequate explanation. He also says that some victims couldn't have been murdered at the crime scenes, but doesn't provide any alternative explanation of how the ripper took them there without being seen.

He also goes on with a conspiracy explanation, & he pretty much uses the mishandling of inquests as proof.

He does provide some interesting ideas, such as how Emma Smith could actually be a real ripper victim. I just find the conspiracy angles tiresome, lazy, & in the last couple of chapters, I felt like I was being talked down to & it felt like there was a condescending tone for people who disagree with any conspiracy ideas.

I'd be cautious about reading it. I thought it was a good read, but the authors high opinion of his theories might be off putting.

I do not like thee Dr. Fell

"The Mad Hatter Mystery" has nothing to do with Alice's Mad Hatter, although it takes place in a locale almost as English as Wonderland, i.e. the Tower of London. As may be guessed from the murder site, Carr relies heavily on atmospherics: shrouds of fog; a corpse with a crossbow bolt through its heart; an unpublished story by Edgar Allen Poe; and above all a mad prankster who steals the headgear of London's elite (everyone wore hats in 1933) and displays his prizes in the most unlikely locations.
When a corpse shows up near Traitor's Gate with a stolen top hat jammed on its head, Scotland Yard automatically enlists Dr. Gideon Fell to solve the bizarre murder.

He solves it of course--but not before an army of suspects each takes his or her turn in the spotlight. Although Carr is most famously known for his locked -room mysteries and 'impossible' crimes, he was also a master of the eerie atmosphere. "The Mad Hatter Mystery" has both in great quantity: lots of macabre touches; and the solution will surprise even the keenest mystery buff. Dr. Fell's tics and grotesqueries aren't as intrusive as in some of Carr's other mysteries starring his massive, eccentrically-dressed detective. The doctor also shows a great deal of restraint (for him) in dropping hints that he already knows the identity of the murderer, even though it's only page forty-five and the reader has two-hundred-and-forty-one pages to go before he or she figures out whodunit.

Supposedly modeled after Carr's idol, G.K. Chesterton, Dr. Fell also resembles a jovial Father Christmas or a President Chester A. Arthur, resting comfortably after a vast meal that was consumed with countless pints of beer. He's not my favorite fictional detective, although he appeared in twenty-three novels culminating in "Dark of the Moon" (1967). However, I do like Carr's atmospheric mysteries so I'll probably end up reading all twenty-three of 'em. This is one of the best, so far.

I love thee madly, Dr. Fell
The Reason Why I'll Gladly Tell...

Dr. Fell reminds me of Jonathan Downes of the Center for Fortean Zoology and author of THE OWLMAN AND OTHERS more than he does of Gil Chesterton or any of those other boring people others love to compare him to. The reason being that the good Doctor, like our Jon, is...ah...well-padded, has great hair, and is a whiz at tackling seemingly impossible and well-nigh insoluble mysteries.

I am not going to tell you a lot about the plot...other reviewers have done that. Nor am I going to complain yet again because the darned book isn't yet available on Kindle when ALL of Carr's Doctor Fell and Sir Henry Merrivale stories (the last written under the pseudonym of Carter Dickson) should be available on Kindle.

Nor will I go on and on about how it was John Dickson Carr (an American author living in England) who was chosen by Adrian Conan Doyle (son of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) to collaborate with him on a book of short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson Exploits of Sherlock Holmes because you probably already know that too.

Instead I'll just tell you that Carr was one of the Grand Masters of the Art and there is no one alive today who can write 'em like this.

OK for the Basics

I think that all of North Americas sea shore critters can not be described in a single book. Certainly not in a book of this size. The publishers where quite bold in the scope and as such much information has been left out. That said let me tell you what is good about this book. The pictures are GREAT! Much better than looking at technical drawings. However, they are not better for identification. The descriptions of animal groups are excellent. For the person with little biological background this will go a good way toward explaining the complexities of ocean life. The method of identification, sorting by superficial appearance is handy, again for the inexperienced. To sum it up, if you want one book to carry during your first summer of beach combing get this one. If you need a companion for a marine zoology class stay away, unless you already have everything else.

Good field guide and beautiful picture book

Perhaps I am going overboard in giving this guide a five star review but even a book with an adequate selection of color photos of marine invertebrates is just so darn beautiful I can't help but cause me to rave and this bok offers a selection that is more than just adequate. There is no way one can include all of the seashore creatures of US into one volume let alone a field guide and Audubon guides are not the best things to use for taxonomy. That being said it is a gorgeous little book and certainly helpful to the average beachcomber. Even if you are a Midwestern landlubber this is a great little volume. If nothing else consider it a mini coffee table book.

Great for Nature Watchers

I found out about Marine creatures in my Marine Bio. class, and I loved them, so I got this book to further my looking into their world, and it's great. A must have for any person interested in going to the seashore, and just watching what runs around in those tidepools and on the beach.

The making of England

With the main text being only 75 pages, this is a very short Very Short Introduction, but an excellent one nonetheless. It covers the years 450 to 1066, but with just a cursory glance at events before 600. It is fact-packed and readable, with good illustrations, including two very useful maps. You should certainly read Roman Britain: A Very Short Introduction before this, and ideally, The Celts: A very Short Introduction, before that. This particular book leaves the reader with a strong sense of how much the Anglo-Saxon age shaped England's landscape and culture. If you want a broad overview of British history, this may be all you need for this period. If you intend to delve deeper into the era, this is a great place to start.

A good overview - informative and accessible

I am a big fan of the idea behind the Very Short Introduction series, and the way in which they provide information in an easily accessible manner. John Blair's "The Anglo-Saxon Age", while not the best example in the series, is certainly up there.

The book is set out in roughly chronological fashion, tracing the political development of England from the earliest settlements in c.450 through to that famous date of English history, 1066. Where it becomes appropriate, Blair takes the opportunity to bring in developments in society, religious culture, and trade and the economy - and it must be said that this structure works very well. The book contains plenty of illustrations to give flavour to the information. There is a list of suggested further reading at the back, which is commendable, although it could be more extensive considering the size of the subject concerned. Similarly, although there are maps to provide context, just two isn't quite enough to show the complex political and territorial changes.

To cover the entire Anglo-Saxon period - a whole six centuries - in just 90 pages (only 75 of which are the main text) was always going to be a tall order. Compare this with "The Crusades: A Very Short Introduction", which weighs in at 150 pages, a better length which allows for a more in-depth study of the subject matter. As a result "The Anglo-Saxon Age" remains only an overview of the subject, although a very respectable one. It is more easily digestible and certainly less daunting than one of the standard histories, such as "Anglo-Saxon England" by Frank Stenton (although that might be more useful for a student of medieval history). It might be worth also considering James Campbell's "The Anglo-Saxons", or Michael Wood's "In Search of the Dark Ages" as good places to start.

At the price this book is being offered by Amazon, it is nonetheless a good buy for the casual reader or for someone encountering the Anglo-Sazon period for the first time. Recommended.

Handy brief guide

John Blair does something in this book that I had thought impossible: he handles over 600 years of history quickly and easily. Well under 100 pages, this book is not only "very short" but very understandable.

Blair begins with some background on Roman-occupied Britain, but the story begins in earnest with the Roman withdrawal and the invasions of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes from mainland Europe. From there Blair describes the development of Anglo-Saxon government and culture, giving lots of time to the Viking invasions and English attempts to fight back.

Overall, this book is a very good, fast-paced (only 75 pages!) guide to the Anglo-Saxon age. Blair covers all the major topics and even has some time for cultural development, including describing the impact of the English outside of England. The book tends to focus more on the later Anglo-Saxon era, from Alfred the Great to the Norman conquest, but this is really more of a matter of how sparsely documented the early years of the period are.

Recommended to anyone hoping for a quick guide to Anglo-Saxon England.
