This book is designed as an introductory course in Tropical Meteorology targeting graduate or advanced undergraduate students. The material within can be covered in a one-semester course program. The text starts from the global scale-view of the Tropics, addressing the zonally symmetric and asymmetric features of the tropical circulation. It then goes on to progressively smaller spatial and time scales – from the El Ni�o Southern Oscillation and the Asian Monsoon, down to tropical waves, hurricanes, sea breezes, and tropical squall lines. The emphasis in most chapters is on the observational aspects of the phenomenon in question, the theories regarding its nature and maintenance, and the approaches to its numerical modeling. The concept of scale interactions is also presented as a way of gaining insight into the generation and redistribution of energy for the maintenance of oscillations of a variety of spatial and temporal scales.

About the Author

T.N. Krishnamurti is Professor of Meteorology at Florida State University. He obtained his PhD in 1959 at the University of Chicago. His research interests are in the following areas: high resolution hurricane forecast (tracks, landfall, and intensity), monsoon forecasts on short, medium range, and monthly time scale and studies of interseasonal and interannual variability of the tropical atmosphere. As a participant in the meteorology team in tropical field projects, he has been responsible for the acquisition and analysis of meteorological data, which extends over most of the tropical atmosphere over several years and is now being assembled and analyzed. Phenomenological interests include hurricanes, monsoons, jet streams, and the meteorology of arid zones.

Dr. Lydia Stefanova is an assistant research scientist at the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS).� Her current research interests are in the area of understanding the nature and manifestations of climate variability and long term climate change, and understanding, quantifying, and improving the quality and usefulness of climate prediction and projection products. Her research includes the analysis of large scale and regional climate variability, dynamical climate forecasting with a focus on near-surface processes at various scales and the applications of climate forecasts to hydrological, ecological and agricultural modeling. She has worked on ENSO, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and Arctic Oscillation as modulators of US climate.

Dr. Vasu Misra is an associate Professor at COAPS whose research interests are in climate variability and predictability. He works with a variety of numerical models to understand climate variations and climate change. These numerical tools include regional atmospheric models, atmospheric general circulation models and coupled ocean-atmosphere models. He is keen on understanding the predictability of a model, and the challenges of real-time climate prediction. Phenomenologically he has worked on ENSO, the South American and the South Asian Monsoons, Tropical Atlantic and Intra-American seas climate variability, and US hydroclimate.

Superbly written, entertaining, and fires the imagination.

I have read this book twice in the last two weeks. There is a wealth of information that has been pulled from the dawn of time. It is interesting, thrilling, and captures the true essence of this subject. It is, without doubt, one of the most well-written books that I have read. Priestley has a witty, unique style that shows his interest in the subject and he has renewed my enthusiasm and drive to work in this area. It is a truly wonderful book.

Great book on how economics effect human rights.

This text on human rights consists of essays by more than thirty scholars, each one arguing a different aspect of human rights. One thing they all have in common is that they discuss how a nation’s economy effects how the rights are enjoyed.

In the seventeenth essay, Judy Fudge (University of Kent) discusses how labor rights have changed as countries move from heavy industry to digital business. She begins with a quote by Bob Hepple, about rights being little more than “paper tigers,” which is an essential problem discussed in this book. She writes about “social rights” as a way to address the deficits of citizenship, and by deficits, I mean the economic inequalities. Just because the law says “everyone is equal” doesn’t mean it’s going to happen that way. Businesses can still promote sexism, and though not discussed in her essay, disabled people can be kept out of a lot of jobs for image reasons. Fudge also discusses how the courts are uneasy at dealing with social rights, owing to their debatable nature as opposed to being codified.

Michael Ignatieff (former politician from Canada) writes about the USA’s focus on civil rights at home while at the same time sponsoring dictatorship in Latin America. The USA, despite the famous Bill of Rights, opted out of the UN declaration of children’s rights, and dragged its heels on the UN convention on genocide. It wasn’t that the USA had no desire for involvement, but that the USA could not use foreign rules in its own courts. I admit that children’s rights go begging in the USA, as seen with the “kids-for-cash” scandal in Pennsylvania. Perhaps US lawmakers, aware of the problem at home, don’t want to look hypocritical. Thanks to the US doctrine of states’ rights, it is difficult for our central government to make laws for the entire nation. Rights an autonomy can be a fickle thing, no?

Human rights are difficult to guarantee anywhere, as opposed to rule of law. It was an issue back in the feudal England, when the Barons could do as they pleased to the serfs. It was a problem in Russia, when the serfs were literally commodities, and the only reason the Czars ended serfdom was that it impeded industrialization. Even in the United States, it’s a problem on the micro level, especially with regard to families. Take for instance the right to keep the money you earn; if a teenage girl in The Bronx has an afterschool job, what’s to stop the girl’s irresponsible mother from bullying her into handing over her paycheck?

The recent book by Janette Sadik-Khan, titled Street Fight, discusses the city of Medellin and what I call “commuter’s inequality.” If you have all the poor people living in the hills above the city, and the commute to town is a two-hour bus ride, then how will the people get to work? If all the public-funded schools are in town, how will the kids get to school? As is the case with many of the arguments in Human Rights in the World Community, many of the deficits of rights are actually deficits of the economy. Poor people are more likely to pull kids out of school and send them to work, so there’s less guarantee that a right to education will be enforced.

I’m of two minds about this book. The back cover copy says it “explores the intersection of photography, infographics, and data visualization.” I think it’s devoted to and shows some amazing examples of the first but comes up well short of achieving the other two.

I’d purchased the book before it was published and so I didn’t have the benefit of other reviews or the ability to see inside it beforehand. If I had, I probably wouldn’t have purchased it. Although the photographs are truly stunning and innovative, the book doesn’t tie the fantastic visuals with actual infographics or data visualization, making me puzzled as to why the latter two are mentioned in the back cover copy.

I use illustrations, typically graphics, in my work to help illustrate data and information. What I was hoping for was a book that would provide examples of how I could introduce more actual photography into the process. The cover photo, for example, gave me the impression it was part of an infographic that would have some stats or data associated with the aircraft shown taking off from the airport in the background. As stunning as this photo is (which is undoubtedly why it is on the cover), it does not include any associated data or information about what is shown, as the spread devoted to the photo inside the book makes clear. I would have expected information, for example, about takeoffs per hour per aircraft type or airline, or perhaps an indication of how cycles of these takeoffs fluctuate during the day. But it’s simply a composite picture of aircraft taking off, albeit a very compelling one.

This goes for the other illustrations in the book as well. The long-exposure photos of lovemaking couples, while beautiful and something I hadn’t seen before, don’t reveal much in terms of data visualization other than confirming that a lot of movement is involved. The two-piece collages of photos of people in the same pose but at different ages are intriguing (and disturbing). If these are meant to be data visualizations I would have liked to see some actual data included and tied in with the photos. What were the two ages compared? How has the body or brain changed over time? What major events have happened to each subject, and do they suggest a link with any changes in appearance over time?

If the photos are meant to be artistic statements or demonstrations of skill in constructing them, they definitely succeed on that level. They are incredibly well done photos, and I admire the skill and creativity of the people who produced them. But the problem I see is positioning the book they’re in as one that intersects photography with infographics and data visualization—I do not see either of the latter two represented with the photos in the book.

If you would appreciate a book of compelling photos that stretch the bounds of what can be expressed and achieved as expressions of artistic and photomanipulation skills, I would recommend this book. If you would like to see the additional step of how such photos can be tied to actual data or infographics, you will not find it here. Given the inconsistency between the book’s contents and back cover description, I’m rating it three stars. I would like to see future editions fulfill the stated premise, because I think there’s a real need for such a book in the data visualization space.

It's a big summary of what is currently being done to explore the most different areas of photography, transforming it into a visual art, along with a comprehensive review of the old origins of these explorations.
I had high expectations of this book, and I was surprised, it was much more than I expected.
You should consider this as a book of visual art, exploration and digital media, not photography, strictly speaking.
The book is a compendium of blog posts, all information should be online.

You better hope you have the Rosetta stone for laboratory manuals ...

If this book is on your syllabus, then God help you. Get ready for complete and total confusion. This book is not written in English. You better hope you have the Rosetta stone for laboratory manuals to translate this into usable language. It is written by the most hasty and unhelpful humans who sit up high in a textbook publishing company castle without a readily available "Contact us" number. Which is lucky for them otherwise they would have gotten an earful from me every single time I tried to do an experiment from this lab. Horrible. Some students might be lucky enough to have a teacher who can translate the confusing and poorly worded procedures. But for those of us with professors who would rather do crosswords than teach, this book is nearly impossible to use. In fact, you better hope you don't blow something up or get acid all over yourself. Some solutions to pre-lab questions are in the back of the book but I have caught numerous typos and missing questions. But that was no surprise to me because the entire text was clearly written by lazy baboons.

One more thing. To Pearson Education, if you ever see this review (since I know how fond of customer contact you are not), I just want you to know that I have a lot of talented English major friends who need jobs. Perhaps you could hire them to edit your publications next time. They'd do a whole lot better job than whoever you're paying to do work now. No science experience required.

Buy the book from Amazon Brand New!!!!!!!!!!

Beware!!!!!!!!!There are alot of sellers selling these lab books(used) without the labs inside of them regardless of what they say in their description.I ordered it used at first and the book was missing alot of pages,I purchased a new book from Amazon & returned the old one and only had to spend about $15 more than the used book cost me and $40 less than my school sells it.Overall Amazon provided me with excellent service in regards to this issue.

Soo disappointed. Paid 228.00 and no access card included. What a scam textbooks have become. Now you need the main book, the lab book and an access card. The total cost is around 450.00 for everything. THAT IS FOR ONE CLASS!!!
