A unique book for new and experienced preppers!

Prepper's Survival Hacks by disaster readiness expert Jim Cobb is unlike any preparedness book I have read before! It goes beyond the hows and whys of building a kit and purchasing the latest "high-speed low-drag" tactical gear, focusing instead on 50 DIY projects -- easy and practical things that you can do or make that will make your disaster experience a little bit easier, and can even save your life! This book will teach you how to make emergency stoves, fire starters, and a water filter among many other things, and gives a variety of projects to improve your living situation, protecting your home from both two and four legged predators. I have tried several of the ideas and found them to be quick and easy fixes to major problems that could occur during a crisis, and I intend to try many more of these money-saving and extremely practical projects! I highly recommend this book for both experienced and inexperienced preppers alike! A copy of this book was supplied by the publisher in exchange for this impartial review.

This book will inspire you to channel your inner MacGuyver

Many preparedness books are full of lists that tell you what supplies you need to survive a coming zombie apocalypse, an epic climate change flash freeze, or a plain old everyday power outage. It's rare that you find a book that allows you to use things you'd normally throw away for survival purposes.

However, Prepper's Survival Hacks by Jim Cobb is that rare exception to the preparedness book rule. You won't find lists of extensive supplies or pricey gear. Loaded with 50 do-it-yourself projects, this book has lists that read more like the contents of your trash can.

Broken up into practical categories, the book contains projects relating to the following topics:

Water
Food Acquisition
Cooking
Fire
Lighting
Survival Kits

The thing I like best about the book isn't just the projects, though. It's the whole MacGuyver-style mindset. Jim makes it seem easy to create what you need from what you have. (I'm not the world's handiest person, but I found the instructions super-easy to follow.)

A review of Prepper's Survival Hacks wouldn't be complete without trying out one of the projects, so in the spirit of really testing out the book, we made the "Buddy Burner".

Using a clean, empty cat food can, some old cardboard, some broken chunks of candle, and a couple of bricks that I grabbed from the garden, I made a nifty little stove.

Did it work? Well, I timed it, and the Buddy Burner brought water to a boil on my counter in just over 3 minutes. To be exact. 3 minutes and 40 seconds.

If you wanted more of a simmer than a boil, you could elevate your pan on another layer of bricks. Pretty awesome, and all made from stuff that folks would normally throw away.

At less than $12, this small book would be an ideal reference to add you your bug-out bag. But more importantly, particularly for those who are new to the survival mindset, use it before disaster strikes and begin to train yourself to think outside the supply list.

I strongly encourage you to order Prepper's Survival Hacks from Amazon. Jim is a very prolific author, but out of all of his very excellent books, this is my favorite, because it encourages the reader to get his or her hands dirty. With supervision, the projects in it are also great for kids. Not only will it teach them valuable survival skills, but it will help them to develop creative problem-solving skills. (We enjoy adding this kind of stuff to our homeschool curriculum.)

2-vol set a great alternative to 1-vol version for med-surg completeness

Jeez, Iggy sure is exhaustive! But then, med-surg really requires a broad knowledge base, so it's got to be. I definitely like the portability of the 2-volume set, although I often have both volumes in my rolling tote in lecture, since we're covering so many chapters per week. At least I can just plunk one volume at a time on my portion of the lecture hall table. Iggy provides a LOT of tables, photos, diagrams, and illustrations, all of which help clarify the concepts.

Although the 8th ed. was required for my cohort, I'm getting along fine with the 7th ed., for those that are also trying to economize on textbook prices. Iggy's writing is quite concise in most chapters, covering a huge amount of information in each paragraph. (I do appreciate a textbook author who doesn't belabor points or get caught up in their own verbal brilliance.)

I'll update this review at the end of N school to give my impression of how well this text prepared me for the NCLEX-RN.

Decent book, information is well organized. Author uses out dated information, and "test banks" dont match book content

The content in the book itself is well organized. Studying pre-test can easily only consist of going over lab values and the information boxes. The chapter objectives are also pretty clear and help when outlining content.

On the negative side:

Some of the information is 10-15 years old. While many things are still the same in nursing, many things are also not. It seems like the author wanted to inject her opinion more than what the more recent (past 5 years) of research says. You can't stress the importance of evidence based practice and use outdated information.

There is also a problem with the "test banks" issued by the publisher. You can tell the person who wrote the questions didn't actually base it on the book. You can catch blatant contradictions in questions vs book content often. This means you have to have regular post-test meetings with your teachers and fight for your grade. I do consider this problem both an issue of the publisher, and the nursing staff at my school (as they should be proof reading test).

Good information, though very unorganized. We had to skip all over the place in my MS class to find the information that was relevant to the topics. this makes it very hard to read and retain information.

About the Author

Carolyn Petrosino is Professor of Criminal Justice in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Bridgewater State University. She served on the Massachusetts Juvenile Justice Advisory Council during the Romney Administration. As a result of her research and writings on hate crime, she was invited to Capitol Hill in 2002 to participate in a Congressional Briefing on the state of hate crime research and public policy in the United States. She recently co-authored American Corrections, now in its second edition. In addition, she has published several articles and book chapters on hate crimes in the areas of the history of hate crime in the United States, affiliation dynamics and recruitment practices of hate groups, and the nature and scope of anti-Black hate crimes. Her next project focuses on communities, collective efficacy, and community response to hate crimes.
