Hitler's First Victims: The Quest for Justice, by Timothy W. Ryback

The remarkable story of Josef Hartinger, the German prosecutor who risked everything to bring to justice the first killers of the Holocaust and whose efforts would play a key role in the Nuremberg tribunal.

Before Germany was engulfed by Nazi dictatorship, it was a constitutional republic. And just before Dachau Concentration Camp became a site of Nazi genocide, it was a state detention center for political prisoners, subject to police authority and due process. The camp began its irrevocable transformation from one to the other following the execution of four Jewish detainees in the spring of 1933. Timothy W. Ryback’s gripping and poignant historical narrative focuses on those first victims of the Holocaust and the investigation that followed, as Hartinger sought to expose these earliest cases of state-condoned atrocity.

In documenting the circumstances surrounding these first murders and Hartinger’s unrelenting pursuit of the SS perpetrators, Ryback indelibly evokes a society on the brink—one in which civil liberties are sacrificed to national security, in which citizens increasingly turn a blind eye to injustice, in which the bedrock of judicial accountability chillingly dissolves into the martial caprice of the Third Reich.

We see Hartinger, holding on to his unassailable sense of justice, doggedly resisting the rising dominance of Nazism. His efforts were only a temporary roadblock to the Nazis, but Ryback makes clear that Hartinger struck a lasting blow for justice. The forensic evidence and testimony gathered by Hartinger provided crucial evidence in the postwar trials.

Hitler’s First Victims exposes the chaos and fragility of the Nazis’ early grip on power and dramatically suggests how different history could have been had other Germans followed Hartinger’s example of personal courage in that time of collective human failure.

Review
“Mr. Ryback’s important book shows how even such a small, stubborn, apparently futile determination to adhere to the rule of law can, with fortune on its side, help see final justice done. It is fitting acknowledgment of a forgotten German or (as Hartinger might have preferred) Bavarian hero.”
—The Wall Street Journal

“Fascinating…Has all the makings of a legal thriller.”
—The Boston Globe

“Fascinating, disturbing…Ryback’s book is a decades-overdue recognition.”
—Jewish Times

“Ryback…here examines an early but enormously significant episode in the evolution of the Nazi program of genocide….An important addition to Holocaust collections.”
—Booklist

“A chilling, lawyerly study with laserlike focus.”
—Kirkus

“In recountingthe compellingstory of a prosecutor who sought to bring to justice the perpetrators of crimes at Dachau in the early days of the Nazis’ reign, Timothy Ryback’s book is all the more startling and important for bringing to life an episode so little known. It suggests what might have been if more Germansat the timehad done their professional duty with equal moral compass.”
—Raymond Bonner, author,Anatomy of Injustice

“This is an extraordinary, gripping, and edifying story told extraordinarily well by Timothy Ryback.I read it with a sense of amazement at the capacity of one good man to stand tall in the face of evil, and at the capacity of others to fall into unspeakable barbarism.”
—Richard Bernstein, author, Dictatorship of Virtue

“In this finely researched and deeply disturbing account of how Jews and Communists murdered in Dachau in 1933 became ‘Hitler’s first victims,’ Timothy W. Ryback finds a rare point of light in the courage of an obscure Bavarian prosecutor who tried to fight the escalating Nazi savagery with the rule of law. Thanks to his documented record of the atrocities taking place at Dachau, Ryback can now demonstrate how, within weeks of coming to power, the Nazis had already set off along the dark path that would lead to genocide.”
—Alan Riding, author, And the Show Went On: Cultural Life in Nazi-Occupied Paris.

“Timothy Ryback’s Hitler’s First Victims is a significant addition to the Holocaust canon. The story of the first four Jews murdered at Dachau, as well as the astonishing account of the German prosecutor (surely a precursor of Claus von Stauffenberg) who, in 1933, attempted to charge the vicious Nazi concentration camp commandant with murder, form the heart and soul of Ryback’s amazing book. The author’s research is prodigious and his accumulation of new details make the reader feel as if he is observing the first spreading of the Nazi plague through a microscope. This is history come alive in your hands.”
—Robert Littell, author, The Amateur

“In this horrifying and heartbreaking account of Dachau's early days, Timothy Ryback restores, to the murderers and the murdered alike, something crucially, necessarily missing from most Holocaust histories: their individuality. Then, by capturing, meticulously and understatedly, the retail barbarity of the place, he helps anticipate the wholesale annihilation to follow. And by recounting the striking heroism of two men—a local prosecutor and a medical examiner, simply trying to do their jobs—he allows us at least to ponder whether, had more such good Germans come forward, it all might just have been stopped.”
—David Margolick, author, Beyond Glory: Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling, and a World on the Brink

“Timothy W. Ryback’s gripping account of one man’s fight against Nazi atrocities holds important lessons for us. Experience demonstrates that the authors of genocide and crimes against humanity frequently test the waters before fully implementing their murderous plans. The Holocaust was no exception. Ryback shows how this genocidal act may have been averted had more people acted with vigilance and determination. Our challenge today is to act on Ryback’s historical insights before new rounds of mass atrocities unfold.”
—Kenneth Roth, executive director, Human Rights Watch

Crimes of the Spring

Thursday morning of Easter Week 1933, April 13, saw clearing skies that held much promise for the upcoming holiday weekend. Mild temperatures were foreseen for Bavaria as they were throughout southern Germany, with a few rain showers predicted for Friday, but brilliant, sunny skies for the Easter weekend. Previous generations hailed such days as Kaiserwetter, weather fit for a kaiser, a playful gibe at the former monarch’s father, who appeared en plein air only when sufficient sunlight permitted his presence to be recorded by photographers. In the spring of 1933, some now spoke in higher-spirited and more reverential tones of Fhrerwetter. It was Adolf Hitler’s first spring as chancellor.

Shortly after nine o’clock that morning, Josef Hartinger was in his second-floor office at Prielmayrstrasse 5, just off Karlsplatz in central Munich, when he received a call informing him that four men had been shot in a failed escape attempt from a recently erected detention facility for political prisoners in the moorlands near the town of Dachau. As deputy prosecutor for one of Bavaria’s largest jurisdictions—Munich II—Hartinger was responsible for investigating potential crimes in a sprawling sweep of countryside outside Munich’s urban periphery. “My responsibilities included, along with the district courts in Garmisch and Dachau, all juvenile and major financial criminal matters for the entire jurisdiction, as well as all the so-called political crimes. Thus, for the Dachau camp, I had dual responsibilities,” he later wrote.

Deputy Prosecutor Hartinger was a model Bavarian civil servant. He was conservative in his faith and politics, a devout Roman Catholic and a registered member of the Bavarian People’s Party, the centrist “people’s party” of the Free State of Bavaria, founded by Dr. Heinrich Held, a fellow jurist and a fierce advocate of Bavarian autonomy. In April 1933, Hartinger was thirty-nine years old and belonged to the first generation of state prosecutors trained in the processes and values of a democratic republic. He pursued communists and National Socialists with equal vigor, and since Hitler’s appointment as chancellor had watched the ensuing chaos and abuses with the confidence that such a government could not long endure. The Reich president, Paul von Hindenburg, had dismissed four chancellors in the past ten months: Heinrich Brning in May, Franz von Papen in November, and Kurt von Schleicher just that past January. There was nothing preventing Hindenburg from doing the same with his latest chancellor Adolf Hitler.

Until then, Hartinger’s daily commerce in crime involved burned barns, a petty larceny, an occasional assault, and, based on the remnant entries in the departmental case register, all too frequent incidents of adult transgressions against minors. Forty-one- year-old Max Lackner, for example, was institutionalized for two years for “sexual abuse of children under fourteen.” Ilya Malic, a salesman from Yugoslavia, was arrested after he “forced a fourteen- year-old to French-kiss.” Hartinger spoke discreetly of “juvenile matters.” Homicides were rare. The only registered murder for those years was a crime of passion committed by forty-seven-year-old Alfons Graf, who put four bullets into the head of his companion, Frau Reitinger, when he discovered her in the back of his company car with another man.

But that year, following Hitler’s January appointment as chancellor and the dramatic arson attack a month later that saw the stately Berlin Reichstag consumed in a nightmare conflagration of crashing glass, twisted steel, and surging flames, the jurisdiction was swept by an unprecedented wave of arrests in the name of national security. In Untergrnberg, the farmer Franz Sales Mendler was arrested for making disparaging remarks about the new government. Maria Strohle, the wife of a power plant owner in Hergensweiler, told a neighbor that she heard Hitler had paid 50,000 reichsmarks to stage the arson attack on the Reichstag; she was sentenced to three months in prison, as was Franz Schliersmaier in Bsenreutin, who put the amount at 500,000. One Bavarian was indicted for comparing Hitler to Stalin, and another for calling him a homosexual, and still another for suggesting he did not “look” German. “Hitler is a foreigner who smuggled himself into the country,” Julie Kolmeder said at a Munich beer garden a few streets from Hartinger’s office. “Just look at his face.” A Munich coachman crossed the law with the indelicate aside, “Hitler kann mich im Arsch lecken.” Euphemistically: Hitler can kiss my ass. More than one person was prosecuted for calling a Nazi a “Bazi.”1 Thousands of others were taken into Schutzhaft, or protective custody, for no apparent reason at all.

The shooting of four men in a failed escape from the Dachau Concentration Camp must have struck Hartinger’s Roman Catholic sensibilities as particularly unfortunate, coming as it did just two days before Good Friday and amid an appeal by the archbishop of Munich and Freising for an Easter amnesty. “In the name of, and on behalf of, the Bavarian bishops, I have the honor, Your Excellency, to extend the following request,” the stately and imperious Cardinal Faulhaber had written Bavaria’s Reich governor on April 3, “that the investigation procedure for those in protective custody be expedited as quickly as possible in order to relieve the detainees and their families from emotional torment.” Faulhaber expressed the desire that the detainees could be home in time for the Easter weekend, reminding the governor that there was no occasion more sacred to Christians than the Eastertide. “If because of time constraints the investigations cannot be completed by Good Fri day,” Faulhaber proposed, “then perhaps out of pure Christian and humanitarian grounds, an Easter amnesty can be granted from Good Friday until the end of Easter.” The cardinal reminded the governor that in December 1914 Pope Benedict XV had invoked a Christmas armistice that stilled weapons on both sides of the front. What worked in a time of war must certainly work in peacetime, was the suggestion. Indeed, the previous month Chancellor Hitler himself had stated that his “greatest ambition” was to “bring back to the nation the millions who had been misled, rather than to destroy them.” What better way to instill a sense of national loyalty than through a gesture of Christian clemency on the holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ? In this deeply Catholic corner of the country, when the archbishop of Munich and Freising, the oldest and most powerful of the state’s bishoprics, spoke, the vast majority of Bavaria’s four million Catholics listened, and on this occasion so did its political leadership.

A week later, the state interior minister, Gauleiter Adolf Wagner, responded on the Reich governor’s behalf.2 “Most Honorable Herr Cardinal, I have the honor of responding to your letter to the governor of April 3, 1933,” he wrote, “to inform Your Eminence that we are in the process of reviewing the cases of everyone currently in detention, and that by Easter more than a thousand individuals will be released from protective custody.” Wagner conveyed additional good news. The state government would permit Easter Mass to be celebrated among those practicing Roman Catholics who remained in detention as long as it did not constitute “a burden to the state budget.” Wagner recommended that “the responsible religious authorities should be directly in contact with the administration of the individual detention camps, whom I will provide corresponding instructions as to how to deal with this matter.”

But now, amid heartening news of the Easter amnesty, came news of the deaths at Dachau. The call to Hartinger that Thursday morning was conducted in conformity with Paragraph 159 of the Strafprozessordnung, or Criminal Procedure Code, which required police officers “to report immediately to the prosecutor or local magistrate” any case in which “a person has died from causes other than natural ones.” Paragraph 160, in turn, obligated Hartinger to take immediate action: “As soon as the prosecutor is informed of a suspected criminal act, either through a report or by other means, he is to investigate the matter until he has determined whether an indictment is to be issued.” In compliance with his Paragraph 160 responsibilities, Hartinger called Dr. Moritz Flamm, the Munich II medical examiner, who was responsible for conducting postmor tem examinations and autopsies in criminal investigations.

Hartinger liked Dr. Flamm. Both men had previously worked in Munich I, Hartinger as an assistant prosecutor and Flamm as a parttime assistant medical examiner. Like Hartinger, he was a man of keen intelligence who had earned perfect grades in school. And like Hartinger, Flamm was a man of sterling professionalism. Flamm autopsies were models of precision and efficiency— not a moment wasted, not a detail overlooked. Often thirty pages in length, they could withstand the most rigorous scrutiny in a court of law. Flamm was particularly proficient in bullet wounds. He had completed his medical training at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in July 1914, just in time to join the 2nd Bavarian Infantry Regiment. He was dispatched to the front in August 1916 with the 3rd Medical Company, where he served meritoriously, earning an Iron Cross, the Bavarian Military Order, and the Friedrich August Cross. “Particularly noteworthy is his absolute reliability and his medical professionalism that make him, without question, suited for any type of service,” the company surgeon had commented after the war. “At the front [Flamm] became virtually indispensable as the situation with medical sup- plies deteriorated,” he wrote, “all the while demonstrating a seemingly inexhaustible dedication to his work.” The surgeon observed that Flamm was notably “modest” and “by nature rather sensitive,” but possessed of intelligence, sound judgment, and humor even “in the most desperate situations.” The surgeon said he had come to know in Flamm a physician “for whom one can only wish full and well-deserved recognition and in good conscience can provide unqualified praise.” Flamm’s handwriting, precise and refined, with playful, elegant flourishes, reflects his calm and easy competence.

Flamm also demonstrated a fierce independence and willing- ness to act on his conscience when circumstances demanded. In the spring of 1919, amid a failed Bolshevik coup that saw thousands taken into protective custody—with and without cause—he exercised his authority as chief physician of a military hospital to order the release of two patients who were being detained on suspicion of collaborating with communists. Flamm was accused of Bolshevik sympathies, but was taken into “personal protection” by his superior, who vouched for him “administratively, professionally, and politically” and insisted that he was a man free of “any personal, moral, or political blemish.” After two years with Flamm in Munich II, Hartinger had come to share the same high regard. In addition, Flamm had a driver’s license and his own motorcar.

1. The word Bazi can be translated as “swindler” or “scoundrel,” and derives from the Bavarian dialect, as does the word Nazi, a shortening of the word Nationalsozialist, but also an old nickname for Ignatius, a popular Bavarian name commonly associated with a country bumpkin, and applied disparagingly to Hitler followers. A Nazi never called another Nazi a “Nazi.” They referred to each other as National Socialists or “party comrades.
2. The Gauleiter, or district leader, was the Nazi Party official responsible for local affairs. These Nazi Party districts corresponded to the thirtythree voting districts for the Reichstag elections. In 1941, the number of Gauleiter and corresponding districts was increased to fortythree.

Josef Hartinger - a name to remember
By AmazonFan
"All that it takes for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing." This Edmund Burke quote is often used when it comes to the horrors of the Holocaust. With 20/20 hindsight, the world wonders how such atrocities could have been allowed to happen. In Timothy Ryback's book Hitler's First Victims, we learn that at least one good man - Munich prosecutor Josef Hartinger - did indeed "do something" as he attempted to investigate the increasing number of suspicious deaths of prisoners at Dachau at the hands of the concentration camp guards.

The book covers the years 1933-34 when Hartinger, at great risk to himself and his career, categorized these deaths as murders and set out to bring the perpetrators to justice. But Hitler's political machine, while still in its infancy, wielded considerable force and the prison camp guards were never indicted.

But Hartinger's work was not in vain. He steadfastly insisted that each death be investigated and an autopsy performed by Dr. Moritz Flamm, a medical examiner trusted to keep meticulous records. Along with Hartinger's notes and interviews with witnesses, these records, after collecting dust for many years, were used in the Nuremburg Trials and are what gave the world an inside look at Hitler's sordid reign of terror.

Ryback is a prolific writer, giving a name, a face, indeed a life to these early victims. Meticulously researched, Hitler's First Victims is a compelling - albeit horrifying - read about a slice of history that was ultimately overshadowed by events to come. But it is a crucial missing piece to the ongoing "how could this have happened?" puzzle.

I did not know the name Josef Hartinger before reading this book, but with gratitude to Timothy Ryback, it is one I will never forget.

Riveting. A lesson from History we Should Learn and Remember
By Lita Perna
Hitler's First Victims, a tight dense book with 31 pages of notes and an appendix, shines a spotlight on Dachau's beginnings, the first murders that occurred here, and the Munich prosecutor Josef Hartinger, who tries to bring the murders to justice. The descriptions of the murders are gut wrenching and brutal, but are necessary to understand the genesis (No pun intended) of what followed. The author believes that the "trail of blood that began on Dachau led ultimately to and seemingly inexorably to Auschwitz."

Timothy W. Ryback captures the texture of the times; what some saw as "the seeds of dictatorship and the slow and insidious Nazi rise to absolute power.

In the fragile beginning of the National Socialists we learn that Hitler publically denounces storm troopers and calls for them to cease and desist on their attacks.
We see how Himmler; who would go on to be one of the people most directly responsible for the Holocaust, initially rises to the Jew's defense. "For us, the citizen of the Jewish faith is as much a citizen as those not of the Jewish faith and his life ad his property are equally protected."

The subject of the book, local Munich Prosecutor Josef Hartinger, has struggled to achieve his current situation. He is well situated with a good marriage, three months short of his fortieth birthday, with a five year old daughter and he looks forward to a bright future. He has everything to lose. But he risks it all...even his life, and he goes ahead with indictments against the Dachau murderers, with only a brave doctor... who also risks his life, on his side.

Hartinger says, "Just because one is without power does not mean one needs to be without courage and ultimately without character. Shouldn't one try to find some way to make a difference, even in such hopeless circumstances, without necessarily jeopardizing one's life?"

There's an incident in the book that plays like a scene from a Hollywood film when an SS guard halts Hartinger at the entrance to Dachau with the threat, "We will shoot you." Hartinger responds, "Then you'll have to shoot me. I'm coming in."

The author leaves no dangling threads. He follows each character in the book all the way to the end. We know what happens to every one of them. This adds both to frustration and satisfaction.

Ryback says at the end of the book that he wants to demonstrate that if Germany "had found more individuals like Hartinger, perhaps history could have been set on a different, less horrific path."

This book may wear you out, fill you up and make you think. It is a very important book.

Outstanding & Horrifying History about the formation of Dachau and Hitler's first victims
By The Gabster
This history of the creation (I use this word as in the creation of a monster) of Dachau and the first victims of the Nazi's murderous rampage that lasted from 1933 until the end of WWII in 1945 is both brilliant and horrifying. Timothy W. Ryback's meticulously researched and written history relies upon the writings and story of German prosecutor Josef Hartinger and forensic medical examiner Dr. Moritz Flamm who both risked their lives by defying the Nazi authorities in Munich by contradicting the "official" reports of the deaths of political prisoners in the regimes first concentration camp. In addition, testimony from the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, held by the allies after WWII brought much of the quashed facts to light. The history is dedicated to the first four victims who were savagely murdered after being brutalized and tortured on April 12, 1933. Their names are Rudolf Benario, age 24; Ernst Goldmann, Age 24; Arthur Kahn, age 21; Edwin Kahn, age 32. They were ostensibly political detainees, never charged, tried or convicted of any crimes, who were rounded up and murdered. They were the first, and as history has clearly demonstrated, they were far from the last.

Dachau was a 20-minute drive north of Munich. Interestingly, the town's name derives from the words for "mud" and "meadow." The makeshift detention facility was constructed on the grounds of the defunct Royal Powder and Munitions Factory, accessible to the Dachau Train Station. Thus began the era of brutalization. The Nazi's relied upon an "unprecedented application of the law of 'protective custody'" to begin their reign of terror.

Five: A Novel, by Ursula Archer

A woman's corpse is discovered in a meadow. A strange combination of letters and numbers has been tattooed on the soles of her feet. Detective inspector Beatrice Kaspary from the local murder squad quickly identifies the digits as map coordinates. These lead to a series of gruesome discoveries as she and her colleague Florin Wenninger embark on a bloody trail – a modern-day scavenger hunt using GPS navigation devices to locate hidden caches. The "owner" of these unofficial, unpublished geocaches is a highly calculating and elusive fiend who leaves his victims' body-parts sealed in plastic bags, complete with riddles that culminate in a five-stage plot. Kaspary herself becomes an unwilling pawn in the perpetrator's game of cat and mouse as she risks all to uncover the motives behind the murderer's actions. Five is definitely not a book for the faint-hearted, but it delivers great suspense, unexpected plot twists, and multi-dimensional characters.

Review

“Like so many satisfying European police thrillers, FIVE combines many story elements--Beatrice's painful personal history, the interpersonal dynamics of the detective squad, and a rogues' gallery of victims and suspects--with convincing specifics. … Most convincing of all is the book's heroine, who perseveres, braving much danger, pursuing an illuminating connection ‘like a thin red thread in the darkness.'” ―Wall Street Journal

“A canny police procedural. The narrative does a slow burn at first, but builds up to an alarmingly faster pace in the second half, as clues and revelations come thick and fast. The novel itself is tightly structured and the mystery element has a terrific number of twists and turns built in that don't let up until the final page. Also excellent are the maddeningly intricate mind-twisters in note form that the cops have to solve in order to move onto the next clue (or, in some cases, the next corpse).” ―The Boston Globe

“An intriguing melding of a gripping police procedural and an exciting update of the puzzle mystery. Archer imbues "Five" with an inventive plot, tense suspense and fully realized characters that seem as if they have been around for years. Archer's clever use of geocaching proves that the light puzzle mystery can be successfully incorporated into a hard-boiled novel with aplomb.” ―Associated Press

“Ursula Archer takes you on a terrifying journey. This is a superior psychological thriller with twists at every level.” ―Karin Slaughter

“A deliciously dark and terrifying cat-and-mouse thriller you won't be able to put down until the last page is read. Haunting.” ―Allison Brennan, New York Times bestselling author of Dead Heat and Cold Snap

“Intriguing and gripping, I was hooked from the start and shocked by the end. A believable hero and a story cleverly told. I loved Five.” ―Neil White, author of Next to Die

“A riveting mystery...The suspense builds until the shocking climax.” ―Publishers Weekly

“[a] fast-paced thriller...Sure to appeal to Stieg Larsson fans.” ―Booklist

“well-constructed ...an inventive plot.” ―Kirkus Review

“Beatrice is a refreshing protagonist who isn't afraid to take chances... Archer's very effective procedural, with some clever twists (and gruesome crimes), also explores the intriguingly odd world of geocaching, and those who inhabit it. While some readers may have things figured out before the end, the journey is well worth it.” ―Library Journal

“[Five is] definitely not a book for the faint-hearted, but it delivers great suspense, unexpected plot twists, and multi-dimensional characters.” ―Mystery Tribune

“Intriguing...this unusual story will kee you guessing and your heart pounding.” ―RT Book Reviews

An intriguing mystery/thriller
By Majanka
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Five is an interesting crime novel combining geocaching with a mystery and murder. For those who don’t know geocaching, you enter GPS coordinates into your cell phone, and then go searching for “treasure” hidden by others. The item could’ve been there for years. Usually it’s something small, but in the case of “Five”, things are a little more gruesome. Think along the line of body parts. Yep, that gruesome.

The writing is excellent. I started this one at eleven thirty at night, hoping to read about half an hour before heading to back. Yeah…that didn’t work. I had to read this book in one sitting, even if it was two o’clock by the time I was finished. Main character, detective Beatrice Kaspary, is an intriguing protagonist. She’s a bit of a clich character – the angry ex-husband, living for the job – but she makes it work. She’s so genuine, she could be a real person. Florin was a great sidekick, and the underlying attraction between both of them made for an interesting turn of events.

But it’s the murdering itself, the killing, and the killer, that really make the book shine. The geocaching elements screams originality (heck, at least to me, it’s the first I’d heard of it) and the killer himself is elusive. This isn’t a madman, which makes it all the more exciting. I kept on reading, even though my eyes were half-closed and I could barely reach the end of a page without yawning, because I simply had to find out who the killer was. In the dead of night, that’s quite a feat.

All in all, an intriguing mystery / thriller, and I’m confident we’ll see much more from this author. She has a great talent for describing characters and scenery.

P.S. Yes, I did go geocaching afterward. It was a blast! And no, I didn’t find any body parts. Thank God.

Not bad, slow in parts
By Gordon
Review of Five by Ursula Archer 3.5 stars

I do not recall ever having read a mystery with Salzburg, Austria as the primary setting. That was the first attraction. Then came the characters, some principle, some accessory; but they all were fully developed personalities, love them or hate them. The story kept on getting darker from the initial discovery of the first victim- a murdered the tattoo footed woman who was found dead at the base of a cliff over hang, with both hands tied tightly from behind. The tattoos on the bottoms of both feet were actually GPS coordinates that used in conjunction with geocaching, provided ongoing clues.

There is a serial killer who the police are referring to as “the Owner”. He/she is also hiding clues in small plastic containers of body parts from his victims, but also sometimes written notes or text messages. These containers are found by using GPS coordinates and the Internet by way of geocache.com. The Owner, for some yet unknown reason, is also keeping in contact primarily with the lead detective, Beatrice Kaspary, from the State Office of Criminal Investigations via text messaging which reveals he knows a lot of private information about Beatrice, which is extremely confounding to her.

One by one, discovery of one victim leads police to the next victim, almost like a kind of signpost. Once the clues actually reveal persons of interest, and police contact is made, those persons ultimately become victims who all suffer death by some sort or other by brutal mutilation. At midpoint in this story the Owner’s identity and motives remain mysterious and cunning. The resourcefulness of the Owner is causing the police fits as the investigation proceeds and then just as quickly recedes.

A police psychological profiler believed the Owners main motive for these mounting murders is the desire to gain more and more attention while at the same time frustrating the police. There was also the possibility that the Owner had an accomplice; a lot of possibilities existed, but none were probable, yet. A bit of focus breaks through when Beatrice’s past is revealed and perhaps the geocache murders
are somehow related but there is still little to no evidence of anything substantial which links all of the murders.

This all comes together nicely at the end. The story is well written, thought out and presented. It was somewhat too long and even seemed to drag toward the ending, but all and all I did like it. At one point I felt it was becoming too creepy (even for the likes of me!), but in the end logic prevail over the supernatural.

I would rate this with 3.5 stars and will keep this author in mind for future reference.

Good psychological thriller...
By Cynthia K. Robertson
As one of 6 million active geocachers, I was surprised to see a new mystery on the Amazon Vine list that used a geocaching-theme. Ursula Archer has written other books, but Five: A Novel is her first adult mystery and very good first effort. I especially liked that it took place in Austria, where geocaching protocol is slightly different than in the United States.

Beatrice Kaspary and Florin Wenninger are called to the scene when a farmer discovers a dead woman in his cow pasture. Kaspary and Wenninger are homicide detectives who work for the Salzburg State Office of Criminal Investigation. With hands tied behind her back, the one strange find on the body is that numbers were tattooed to the soles of her feet. It takes a little figuring before the detectives realize that the numbers are GPS coordinates. One of their colleagues is a geocacher, and he gets assigned to help with the case because of his hobby. Soon, they're involved in a geocaching chase, but instead of looking for treasures, they're finding body parts and dead bodies. The entire time, the killer is toying with them and taunting them for being incompetent. But Kaspary and Wenninger also figure out that in playing the killer's game, they are also lending him assistance. This psychological thriller had me guessing until the end.

Archer is a good writer and I enjoyed her descriptions of things. At one point, Kaspary “had never described to the belief that dead people looked like they were sleeping. They looked like a foreign species. Shockingly different, even if they had died peacefully.” But I did get more than tired of the drama with her ex-husband and also, the description of every cup of coffee she ever made or drank. I don't think that these things added to the story. But overall, Five is a fine read and you don't have to be a geocacher to enjoy this book. In fact, it might be a good introduction to geocaching, although geocachers tend to be kind, gentle people—unlike in the book.

Review
A uniquely engaging, provocative, and I daresay fun invitation into the fascinating worlds of the Bible by two master teachers who clearly love what they do and want to share that love with others. It's a gift to teachers and students alike. I can't wait to use it in my own introductory courses.

Author of The Rise and Fall of the Bible: The Unexpected History of an Accidental Book

"Kaltner and McKenzie have done it again! As in their earlier Uncensored Bible, they have written a lively, insightful, and humorous introduction to the Bible that is sure to keep all readers--especially students--awake, informed, and entertained. In the field of biblical studies, that is no small feat! I enthusiastically recommend The Back Door Introduction to the Bible to one and all."

From the Back Cover
The Bible's in influence on Western culture is profound: from Genesis through Revelation, its stories are referenced in commerce, the arts, and beyond. Know the stories, and you understand the allusion in a commercial, a painting, or a movie. Living in the Western world, one cannot be culturally literate without knowing something about the Bible.

A product of a very different world, the Bible can be hard to read and difficult to understand. In The Back Door Introduction to the Bible, Kaltner and McKenzie recognize this challenge and address the "What's the deal with that?" questions students may have. In explaining the customs and social mores of the time, the authors take the reader to a level of understanding where the real significance of a story is more clearly revealed. It will open up the opportunity for a more engaged, lively, and spirited classroom dialogue.

As a college religion instructor, I use this as the introductory text f or biblical interpretation. It's organization isn't chronological in terms of historical development of the Bible, nor does it follow the individual books of the Bible. Instead, it's topical, in that it introduces major issues for interpretation, including how archaeology, geography, and genre help to understand, interpret, and apply the Bible to daily life.

There is no preset religious thoughts from the writers. They analysed the bible from different perspective to give you a conclusion which is not seek for religious-correctness but evidence-based reviews of the bible.

very good
By A Customer
I used to be a huge fan of Diana Palmer until all of her books started sounding the same. Maybe she should stop putting out so many and go for quality and different scenarios than quantity. That said, this is one of her books I still have and reread occassionally. Hunter is a half-breed indian who thinks that Jennifer is too much a "cover girl". She is in fact a top geologist whose looks have actually hindered her. She is in a male dominated field, working with Hunter (a chief of security) trying to uncover an ore that rebel countries are also looking to find and sparks fly. I recommend this DP work. Both of these characters were briefly mentioned in "His Girl Friday" or "Hoodwinked". I can't remember which.

Sweet Sparring Romance
By Sheila M
FINAL DECISION: This is a light novel with a sparring romance between the hero and heroine. A cross-cultural romance with characters who are good people and compassionate, I enjoyed their interplay and the lack of cruel behavior by the hero.

THE STORY: Jennifer Marist is a blond geologist who works in a male field and has been separated from most men as a result. She is twenty-seven but hasn't had a serious relationship because of her career. Phillip Hunter is chief of security for Ritter Oil and is tasked with secret operations. When Jennifer's work requires her to spend a week in the desert, Hunter is sent along to protect her. Hunter is determined to not succumb to his attraction to Jennifer. As a Native American, he has sworn never to get involved with a white woman again. So his predicament is this -- keep Jennifer at a distance while protecting her.

OPINION: I really liked the connection between Hunter and Jennifer. This book was originally published as a category romance and thus is short and had restrictions on the length and content at the time it was written. Despite this, however, the sweet romance between Hunter and Jennifer shines through. I especially like how the two characters spar with one another and how Hunter has made a habit of rescuing Jennifer from the trouble she gets into. Hunter is one of the sweet Palmer heroes...compassionate and gentle rather than rude and angry.

WORTH MENTIONING: At times Palmer heroes are exceptionally cruel to the heroines because they either misunderstand the motivations of the heroine or don't appreciate her innocence. Hunter doesn't want to get involved with Jennifer, but he is much kinder toward her than might be expected in a Palmer book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: HUNTER is connected with HIS GIRL FRIDAY but can be read as a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Can't put down!
By Angela Amos
This is one of my all time favorite books! It was originally published back in the 90's and I read it when it was newly published. Now I found it again, thanks to Amazon.com. I'll reread it often. Hunter is the ideal hero. An alpha male before alphas were popular. Get this book, you will not regret it.

God will expose what we are hiding in our hearts, and tear down the walls of low self-esteem and low self-worth in order for us to be empowered to live completely for Him. We must be willing to confess our sins, face the hurt and commit to the process of being restored from the brokenness.

Combinatorial Methods with Computer Applications (Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications), by Jonathan L. Gross

Combinatorial Methods with Computer Applications provides in-depth coverage of recurrences, generating functions, partitions, and permutations, along with some of the most interesting graph and network topics, design constructions, and finite geometries. Requiring only a foundation in discrete mathematics, it can serve as the textbook in a combinatorial methods course or in a combined graph theory and combinatorics course.

After an introduction to combinatorics, the book explores six systematic approaches within a comprehensive framework: sequences, solving recurrences, evaluating summation expressions, binomial coefficients, partitions and permutations, and integer methods. The author then focuses on graph theory, covering topics such as trees, isomorphism, automorphism, planarity, coloring, and network flows. The final chapters discuss automorphism groups in algebraic counting methods and describe combinatorial designs, including Latin squares, block designs, projective planes, and affine planes. In addition, the appendix supplies background material on relations, functions, algebraic systems, finite fields, and vector spaces.

Paving the way for students to understand and perform combinatorial calculations, this accessible text presents the discrete methods necessary for applications to algorithmic analysis, performance evaluation, and statistics as well as for the solution of combinatorial problems in engineering and the social sciences.

Review

… The book is very carefully written and might be a good starting point for undergraduate students. …
―Zentralblatt MATH 1168

I recently got[this] book on combinatorics and applications to computer science, and I like it so much that I am trying to re-shape some of the discrete maths courses I teach so that I could use it. I liked particularly[the] section on asymptotics, which is much more accessible for my undergrads than Graham, Knuth, and Patashnik.
―Josef Lauri, University of Malta

generally good book on discrete mathematics
By Chee Lim Cheung
This is, on the whole, a generally good book on discrete mathematics- strong on graphs (the author's specialty) and networks, not so comprehensive on combinatorics. The eclectic mix of topics covered - permutations, recurrences, generating functions, graphs, networks, finite geometries, etc - tend to make the book disjointed and unfocused at times. The reader will be better served by studying the topics individually in greater depth. A possible reading list would be: Combinatorial Problems and Exercises by Lovasz, generatingfunctionology by Wilf and, yes, Gross's very own Graph Theory and Its Applications.

Combinatorics
By Dragos Velicanu
Good book overall. Easy to read and informative. Good at teaching you how to solve problems. Example problems are sometimes only the easiest problems, and extending the method to harder problems is not always trivially apparent. Also sometimes skips somewhat important steps in solving example problems.

I refer to this book as the 'bible' for administrative assistants because it is a comprehensive guide to knowledge that is essential for office proficiency. Anyone who is thinking of pursuing administrative work as a career or who is already working, will benefit by owning this book. It's a great precursor and a helpful aid to real-life work experience. It was the most important textbook I used to study for and pass the CAP (Certified Administrative Professional) exam.

Rating for Procedures & Theory
By Tara Ottolini
I am very pleased with this purchase. This is the first book that I have purchased for my college textbooks. I like how instead of reading a link in the paper book and then having to get on the computer to look at it, all you have to do with the kindle version is click on the link and it automatically takes you there. I have had classmates actually go buy a kindle after seeing mine and how easy it is to use!
