Okay book, targeted use

I used this for review for the Occ Med boards and found it somewhat helpful. There were a lot of typos and grammatical errors in the book; there were also some inaccuracies. The pretest book for Prev Med was more helpful than this one.

Too much trivia for effective board review

I bought this to prepare for the ABPM occupational medicine boards. It focuses too much on trivia to be helpful for board preparation. I guess it could be helpful for someone who wants to play "Occupational Medicine Jeopardy." I did fine on the boards but as I was trying to work my way through this book in preparation, I thought I didn't know anything.

About the Author
Robert J. Marzano, PhD, is the cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research Laboratory in Denver, Colorado. Throughout his forty years in the field of education, he has become a speaker, trainer, and author of more than thirty books and 150 articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention His books include: Designing & Teaching Learning Goals & Objectives, District Leadership That Works, Formative Assessment & Standards-Based Grading, On Excellence in Teaching, and The Art and Science of Teaching. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are internationally known and widely practiced by both teachers and administrators. He received a bachelor s degree from Iona College in New York, a master s degree from Seattle University, and a doctorate from the University of Washington. Debra Pickering, PhD, consults with schools and districts nationally and internationally as a senior scholar for Marzano Research Laboratory. Throughout her educational career, Dr. Pickering has gained practical experience as a classroom teacher, building leader, and district administrator. For many years, she has used this experience to provide training and support to K 12 teachers and administrators as they seek to continually improve student learning. In addition to her work with schools, Dr. Pickering has coauthored (with Dr. Robert Marzano) educational books and manuals, including Dimensions of Learning, Classroom Instruction That Works, Classroom Management That Works, and Building Academic Vocabulary. She has also been an adjunct professor of curriculum, instruction, and assessment courses at several universities. She has worked as a national educational trainer for the National Resource and Training Center at Girls and Boys Town in Nebraska. A prominent member of numerous educational organizations, Dr. Heflebower has served as president of the Nebraska Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and president-elect for the Professional Development Organization for Nebraska Educational Service Units. She was president-elect of the Colorado Association of Education Specialists and legislative liaison for Colorado Association of School Executives. Her articles have been featured in the monthly newsletter Nebraska Council of School Administrators Today, and she is a contributor to The Teacher as Assessment Leader and The Principal as Assessment Leader. Dr. Heflebower holds a bachelor of arts from Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska, a master of arts from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and an educational administrative endorsement from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She also earned a doctor of education in educational administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Good for newbies

I read this book because engagement is the new flavor of the month in education, and I want to be familiar with the jargon. A great deal of renaming basic, well-known pedagogical principles. If you've been in the classroom for several years, this book is too long as a refresher of things you know you should be doing. Primarily written for and more appropriate for secondary. Examples of teachers applying the author's suggestions seem very stilted. Good book for those new to the classroom.

The flapper, which later became closely associated with the 'roaring' 1920s, was a personification of the upheavals of the time, embodying fears and anxieties about modernity, and instabilities of gender, class, race, and national identity. In the period immediately after the Great War, these modern women represented not only newness and hedonism, but also a frightening, uncertain future. A thought-provoking teach-yourself course in ethics

As a retired therapist, I find much of this book applies just as well to life in general as it does to the practice of psychotherapy. Granted, it's a slow read. These authors don't tell us what to do, they don't tell us what is or is not ethical. They ask us questions--they challenge us to think. I find myself needing to stop for a while to ponder a question or two. There's a thought-provoking exercise on pp. 55-57--three pages of explanations we humans use to justify the actions we're not very comfortable with. For example, "It's not unethical as long as a managed care administrator or insurance care reviewer required or suggested it. . . . It's not unethical as long as no law was broken . . . " Seeing these justifications in print is, well, thought-provoking.

When the news came it made Fletcher nervous, as he was working but didn’t want to miss his chance to enlist; reaching an agreement, he began his journey the following day.

Two years later, on the third day at Gettysburg, Fletcher recalls how he became temporarily afflicted with a “bad case of cowardly horror” following the order to prepare to charge.

But Fletcher could also be a restless man and was brave to a fault, frequently seeking permission for dangerous raids or patrols in the lulls between battles.

Wounded on numerous occasions, Fletcher became incapacitated for further infantry service and was transferred to the cavalry, where he would serve for the rest of the war.

William Andrew Fletcher (1839-1915) was a lumberman, scout and soldier from Louisiana. In 1856 the family moved to Texas, and five years later he enlisted in the Confederate Army. Serving throughout the Civil War, he survived and returned to Texas, where he later married and raised a family.

William Fletcher joined the Confederate Army in 1861. He served with the Army of Northern Virginia's elite Texas Brigade until the Battle of Chickamauga. Unable to march because of wounds, he transferred to the cavalry and finished the war with the Texas Rangers, then wrote his memoirs 40 years later. Most of the original copies were destroyed in a fire. The current edition presents unvarnished images of hard marches, short rations and battles in which being wounded could prove worse than being killed. Fletcher describes the horrors of being a Civil War casualty as vividly as any firsthand account from either side. The author emerges from these pages as fighting less for a cause than for his own pride in being a good soldier. His narrative does more than many learned monographs to explain the Confederacy's long endurance against overwhelming odds.

About the Author
Richard Wheeler, an ex-marine, is the author of sixteen other books of military history, eleven of which deal with different Civil War campaigns and battles, including Voices of the Civil War, winner of the New York City Civil War Round Table's Fletcher Pratt Award. Wheeler is also the author of Voices of 1776: The Story of the American Revolution in the Words of Those Who Were There (Meridian). He lives in Pine Grove, Pennsylvania.

One of the best 10 first hand accounts of the war

Just as compelling as "Co.Aych", this would make an incredible movie. That is certainly one of the reasons it is found on so many bookstore shelves. It does not receive the attention it deserves because, like every other book of its kind written as a participant, it deflates slavery aa a possible motive for fighting. This is the adventure if one tough, daring, funny young rebel whose brawn, wits and insticts got him through the WBTS alive. The business of jumping off a POW train seemed more like something out of an Indiana Jones adventure. If he'd worn the "blue" he'd be in every textbook. Tired of other writers interpretations and want to go to the well for yourself? This is a great place to start.

Excellent Source for the Common Soldier

One of the best CW books I have read to date. Fletcher's experiences reflects the true hardships and nastiness of war. Excellently written in a first person format. Mr. Fletcher seemed to be a level headed and unbiased man, and his book showcases this.

THIS ONE NEEDS TO BE IN YOUR COLLECTION

Excellent, first had observations made by a common private in during the Civil War. The author IS NOT a professional writer. This makes it all the more valuable. The author is not writing the book to entertain, or to pass along old, gory war stories. This is a story by a simple man trying to tell us his point of view, simple as that. This account is quite valuable to anyone interested in the study of this horrible conflict. Recommend it's reading and recommend you add it to your collection. I do wish there had been more like this one.
