I have had the good fortune of a life that exposed me to multiple aspects of human experience. From the hallowed halls of academia in the University of Cambridge to the horrors of civil war in the former Yugoslavia.So when I was at a post-screening Q&A of Shadow Company - my documentary about modern day mercenaries - I was stunned to get this question from a lady in the 2nd row."How dare you make them human?"The answer, of course, is that the world is one giant gray area. There is no simple dividing line between black and white or good and evil. The idea that men with guns are somehow evil is as absurd as assuming that all men without guns are good. My storytelling intentions have never been to vilify or glorify. When your youth has given you two contrasting perspectives of conflict and reality you cannot unsee the importance of either of them.My goals have always been to educate and entertain while telling a story. An honest story about one of the oldest professions in the world - soldiers for hire. I did that with the documentary - and I did it again with this book. As a viewer/reader I like to be given the respect that I can make up my own mind when presented with a bunch of opinions and facts.I hope you do too.Thanks to a dude named Zack who convinced me that we could make a cool graphic novel that could stand alone. He was right. Thanks to my parents for always worrying about what I was up to - but always encouraging me to do it anyway. I've had better, but a useful supplement

Excellent format and quick read. Not as strong as shelf life pediatrics or obgyn, but has additional outline in the back for quick review. If you are studying for the IM shelf, this is a decent short resource for the first week of the rotation as it hits on some integral points. The questions are too easy / straight forward and the scope too narrow to rely on for comprehensive shelf prep, however. It fits in white coat pocket and can provide entertainment on a slow service, but do not substitute for IM essentials / MKSAP or UWorld.

A fairly detailed and comprehensive book

A good read to get the key facts on the struggle between the conquistadores and the Indians. Hanke focuses mainly on the abuses of the conquistadores, the encomienda system and the long battle of Fray Bartolome de las Casas for Indian rights and freedoms. The book is very well organized, with Part II "Spanish Experiments in America", especially interesting. Overall, a worthy read for understanding the reasons behind the conquest and the problems that ensued.

A cute contemporary for the summer!

There's just something about reading a contemporary in summer. I think that's why I was so pumped to read Paper or Plastic!

The story basically follows a girl named Alexis who recently tried to steal from SmartMart. She ends up getting told that she can work at SmartMart for the summer in order to make up for it and she'd even get paid. This way, it won't show up on her permanent record. Her mom is so enthusiastic about this opportunity and has Alexis take advantage of it. However, Alexis doesn't really want to be caught dead at SmartMart. Alas, she takes the job anyways. At her job, she ends up meeting Noah, who is a grade above her at school and just happens to be so cute. The two of them get closer as the summer goes on.

I thought that the romance was very cute and believable. Alexis liked to think that she was too good for SmartMart a lot of the time, but Noah showed her that working there was really a good opportunity. Plus, she gets to make a little extra money, which is never a bad thing.

I found the reason behind why Alexis was offered a job at SmartMart to be really touching. I don't know why, but this stuck with me throughout the book! The owner's son was actually caught stealing somewhere once and he didn't get the chance to redeem himself, so the owner thought that Alexis deserved a second chance, which is why she was offered the job in the first place.

I loved Alexis's character growth and development. She started out as someone who thought that SmartMart was a place for nobodies to work; people that were going nowhere in life. However, that slowly changed as the novel went on.

In the end, I really liked this book. It was a cute, quick read and I loved the romance!

I received a copy of this book, from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. In no way did this sway either my review or my rating!

Everything about this book was cute, sweet and endearing. From the characters, even the crazy ones, to the storyline I am absolutely smitten! It was full of surprises and the only thing I regret is reading it so fast! I picked it up in the morning and was done with it before bed time. And that was with having to stop and do other stuff throughout the day. I was obviously hooked.

Like I said though this book really took me by surprise. I had a feeling it was going to be super cute just from the title and the cover alone. It had already been trapped in my radar so that's not what had me surprised. There's so much more going on beneath the cover than the blurb states. There's so much stacked against Lex and Noah that you had to wonder how anything could even be possible. Stuff that goes beyond simply geeky, loner boy and beautiful, popular girl. They're in different social circles so there's two sets of friends in the way. They come from two different worlds as well and to top it off each of them have very different, but very serious issues at home as well. It's just a huge mess but when the two of them are together all I hoped for was that they'd fight for each other. I'm such a sucker.

I was a bit worried towards the beginning because some of the characters were...well pretty odd once Lex started working at SmartMart. But just as they did with her, after a while they all just sort of become endearing and made me smile. Especially one named Ruthie, who in going for complete honesty here, I figured would be the one character to break the story from me. Instead she ended up becoming, after Lex and Noah of course, one of my favorite characters in the book! I feel like everyone would benefit from having someone with her enthusiasm, positivity and excitement in their lives. Well, at least in small doses!

Sometimes there is just nothing like a really good Young Adult romance. Where it focuses on the romance and the stories of the characters without people falling into bed at the turn of every page. Don't get me wrong I read and enjoy books like that too! It's just nice to switch gears on occasion and read something like this. Lex and Noah's romance was beyond sweet and I absolutely fell in love with them. Sure Lex drove me crazy here and there because of how much she cares about what other people think about her but she always seemed to make up for her actions in other ways. And Noah, oh man, I always feel so creepy that I'm crushing on a character who hasn't quite hit the age where it's legal to drool over him...even if he is fictional! But Noah is totally worth it. He is such a good, good person.

If you're looking for a fun and quick Young Adult read that's sweet and full of heart then I highly recommend this book. The summary doesn't even do it justice. A huge thanks to Entangled for the opportunity to read and review this book!!
