Mercies in Disguise

Mercies in Disguise is a tender love story of two people, Abigail and Stanley, who fall in love
only to face impossible odds. A relationship seems unlikely. Set in the 20's, the story is the second in the series, The Roaring Twenties.
Abigail is raised by a domineering mother who wants to keep her daughter under her thumb. So when Abigail allows herself to dream of the handsome sailor Stanley, the odds of her mother agreeing to a marriage seem impossible. Then if that isn't a big enough obstacle, Abigail contracts a dreaded disease prevalent in the day - TB - and is confined to a sanitarium.
Stanley doesn't feel free to give his heart to any woman, especially the woman he's in love with - Abigail. He's suffering from the horrible trauma he experienced in the war including watching his buddy die in his arms. Stanley can never be whole again. When he quits his job as a sailor on the famous steamboat the Ticonderoga to follow Abigail when she leaves for the sanitarium, he listens to his heart instead of his mind.
Abigail's serious illness, her controlling mother, and Stanley's past all contribute as barriers to their romance. Only when God provides His mercies in disguise, can Abigail and Stanley find hope for a future together.
As a delightful surprise at the beginning of the story, the talented JoAnn Carter gives the reader a glossary of current expressions used in the decade such as mind your potatoes and glad rags. Did you know the term in those days for a guy or a dude was fella?

Mercies in Disguise

In Christian circles, I find the people critique more than writing style, characterization and plot development. Our readers look to their recreational fiction to encourage them spiritually as well. That's a tall order-especially when the Christian experience can be so varied. However, I have found a novella for those of you who are looking for a short romantic read that champions traditional Christian values.
The heroine is a bit of wallflower, but she is a woman who reads her Bible and struggles to overcome her shy nature. The hero carries around pain from WWI, but he is also buoyed up by his faith. Set in the "Roarin Twenties," Mercies in Disguise has everything from steam ships to TB sanitariums, complete with jargon from the time period and a blooming romance.
I'd recommend this book for readers who are looking for characters that delve into Bible study, believe in witnessing about their faith and like a romance that is about spiritual compatibility. If this is you, check out Joann Carter's novella. This is the second novella in her "Roarin' Twenties" series, and she currently has four books out with Desert Breeze Publishing.

Beautiful story!!!

Oh my goodness, the heart shown in this story is amazing! Abigail and Stanley are such a wonderful pair. She's so sensitive to his sorrowing heart, and he is so drawn to her caring, gentle spirit that it really seems like a match made in heaven.
You can't help but hope that Abigail can find the strength to reach beyond her shyness, and that Stanley can lay aside the guilt and pain he feels from the horrors he's seen.
The real beauty here is in seeing the faith they both possess. As her illness overshadows the future, love shines through the darkness. What a wonderful story this is, as well as a beautiful depiction of the past and what it really meant to those who lived through it.
