"The first formal right hepatectomy was reported by Lortat-Jacob and Robert in 1952. Before that time surgeons tried to steer clear of liver sugery because of the risk of uncontrollable haemorrhage and the operative mortality rate of at least 20 percent. However a widening knowledge of segmental hepatic anatomy described by Couinaud in 1957, and elaborated by Bismuth in 1982, led to the development of safe resectional techniques for the various major segments of the liver so intraoperative deaths have become rare events in elective liver surgery. The techniques of hepatobiliary surgery have developed rapidly and the subject is now recognised as a subspecialty in its own right to encompass very advanced procedures such as transplantation from living, related donors, split liver transplantation and neonatal liver replacement. This book (dedicated to the memory of Professor Gozzetti of Bologna) is an atlas of every type of surgical technique applicable to liver surgery and is based on the work of the surgical department in Bologna over more than 15 years. A brief summary of current concepts of hepatic anatomy is followed by descriptions of the standard methods of liver resection as well as the more unusual and difficult operations designed to resect single segments such as the caudate lobe (segment 1), segment 4 or segment 8. Other topics include total vascular occlusion of the liver, which is a very valuable surgical technique for extensive tumours, intraoperative ultrasound, portal embolisation and the management of trauma. The surgery of cystic disease of the liver and tumours of the bile ducts is included and almost one third of the volume is devoted to a comprehensive review of the techniques of liver transplantation. I appreciated the inclusion of discussions on possible technical complications in many of the sections, especially as the authors detail the methods of management. These comments are valuable and extremely useful for any newcomer to liver s rgery. As a minor criticism I would have preferred the more general sections of the text to have been grouped at the beginning of the book to form an introduction to the chapters concerned with resectional techniques. It seems a little unusual to describe and illustrate all of the standard operations before introducing a discussion on the general principles of liver resection in section 14, and the indications for liver resection in section 18. Throughout the text there are references to the results of the various operations, but these are, of necessity, rather restricted in scope and the reader would have to refer to other texts for further data. The superb quality of the illustrations, produced in the department of anatomy of Bologna, provides the outstanding feature of this book, although it was a little disappointing to find that the section devoted to the resection of tumours of the extrahepatic bile ducts was not illustrated in the same manner and the intraoperative photographs used in this chapter lack the clarity of the illustrations in the other sections. A potential purchaser of a book on liver resection can now choose from a wide range of texts but in my opinion this book should be high on the list. The technique of illustration avoids the simplification of the more usual type of line diagram and avoids the lack of clarity which often accompanies the reproduction of intraoperative photographs. It really does give a good impression of the 'feel' of liver surgery and does not avoid discussion of the potential hazards. Furthermore although the book was designed primarily as a manual for liver surgeons I am sure that any gastroenterologist with an interest in liver medicine would appreciate the illustrations both as an extremely useful guide to the current surgical repertoire of liver surgery and as an extremely fine example of the art of the medical illustrator." - Reviewed by E. Future Accountant Lovers Dream!

I love this book because it breaks it down till you cant break it down anymore also it gives you many examples. In addition to say during my first semester of college fall 2013 I passed this class with an A. This coming up semester I'm going to be taking Accounting 1200 and I know I have a long ways to go but with this book I'm on a good start!

Stole my money fair and square.

It was required for class, and it did the job. I hate paying such artificial prices for textbooks. They are only so expensive because the publishing companies know they can get away with it without anyone causing a fuss. New book versions are just copied information jumbled from the previous years book. It is criminal what they do to us. LET'S FIGHT BACK, sign petitions, call your representatives. This is not right!!!

Also, this book teaches 80's bookkeeping, not modern computer accounting. But it has all the same vocabulary people use. If it is not required for a class, I would recommend another accounting book.

Just what I needed for class

I needed a faster alternative to receiving my books a week before class started. I found the accounting book on here and ordered with free shipping and as expected my item arrived on time. I even had enough spare time on my hands to browse a couple of chapters to be better prepared in class. Book was in very good used condition and is considered resell able but I will be using this for my next accounting class. Overall I am very satisfied!

Simply best place to learn OpenGL

As consumer grade 3D accelerators began to support the OpenGL ICD many Win32 programmers are using the OpenGL 3D API to develop real-time 3D applications. This new breed of OpenGL developers are looking for a good place to start. The Offical Guide to Learning OpenGL (also refered to as "the redbook") is that starting place.
Mason Woo and the OpenGL Review Board, along with other contributors walk the reader though well thought out example programs and explain in detail each OpenGL function call. The chapters are well organized, and authors take a complete platform independate approach to OpenGL. An excellent choice for a college text book on the subject of real-time 3D graphic programming.
The only other book to be considered is the OpenGL SuperBible, but it's poorly organized in comparison and focuses only on the Win32 platform. This book should only be considered if the reader is new to programming and needs to be walked though setting up the development enviroment (such reads should consider going back and learning more about their IDE before venturing into OpenGL programming anyway)
For overall content, reference and presentation the OpenGL Programming Guide is the best book I've read covering any API.

Well, this book is pretty good. It explains some nice math calculations for things if you wish to do them yourself (which i think is a good idea). If you're like me, you've probably downloaded some demo effects done in openGL, and if they're fullscreen... they're usually extremely slow (no openGL ICD). You really shouldn't be discouraged, this book tells you how to do things the easy way, straight openGL. It isn't a bad idea for just learning and whatnot. But you obviously won't reach fast fps by doing so, espically in fullscreen modes. If you program Pure win32api, you'll have to learn on your own how to set the pixel format and establish windows, they're not covered in this book because it's win32 functions, and as they say in the book... they want to be general enough for you to do them in any platform, that's why they cover GLUT in this book... mostly to assign camera angles, windows, ideling..... what have you. The best thing you can do is use CreateWindow() and SetPixelFormat() to do openGL in windows. It's easy after that, get the hDC of the dialog, and establish a HGLRC and start drawing... down forget to releast the DC in the end... Back to the book, it's very good for all ranges of programmers, but use it mostly for reference... unless you wanna overuse GLUT like this book does. And as for GLAUX... it's better to learn 3d geometric object handling on your own... but whatever you think...

Strong Buy ! A 3D image says a 1000 words

I have taught Opengl for four years. I've found the best results by teaching from the OpenGL programming guide. Students are lectured from the material in the book, numerous examples are provided illustrating the concepts and principles of 3D programming and opengl function calls. I use VRML 2.0 to demonstrating the code examples, and student can read the opengl code for the example. During the Semester students use the OpenGL programming Guide to create a 3D game. The game uses movable cameras, hierarchial motion, collision detection, display lists, texture maps, materials, lighting, and nurb surfaces. The material is absorbed within a 5 to 10 week period. I've tried other books like the OpenGL superbible, but found the Opengl Programming Guide to be much more comprehensive, and therefore more productive in the results. The OpenGL Programming Guide is a book to keep. Some of the new features in the current release is : introduction to interleave arrays, new glut libraries, and increased documentation on picking, selection and feedback. The author was born and raised in New Orleans, where she continues to live today with her daughter and husband. She attibutes her love of Carnival season to her parents. From riding on a float, marching with the De La Salle Cavalettes or being a participant in the crowd, Mrs. Spedale has participated in every aspect of Mardi Gras. But most of all, Mardi Gras day has always been a family affair! Now, she is passing this unique cultural experience on to her daughter, Ruby Rose. This story is based on acutal events that occurred over several months following Mardi Gras 2009. As Ruby Rose noticed the beads dangling from trees that line St. Charles Ave and Veterans Blvd, the author recalled fond memories of past seasons. The beads have always been on the trees for several months after parade season, but it was through the eyes of a child that made them come to life. It is the hope of this author that those who read the book will appreciate the memories created when family and friends spend time together at a parade.

Another GREAT read from Mary Frame!

I had the great privilege of beta reading this for Mary and I fell in love with Dean the moment Freya, um, ran into him :-) Freya was hysterical in Imperfect Chemistry and she does not disappoint for her story. She is funny and honest and truly a character you want to root for. Dean is one of those book boyfriends you fervently wish was real because he's that perfect mix of good guy (really good guy) who's a little dangerous.

Lucy is back as well and I love her now as much as I did with Imperfect Chemistry - whenever Lucy and Freya are together shenanigans abound! These two have such a sweet friendship and I love the scenes where they are together.

I really enjoyed the twist at the end - I did not see it coming (and I know that's been said TONS about other books, but I really didn't see it coming!).

This is a book where you can trust the author because you know she's going to tell you a great story with interesting, fun characters and you know you're going to enjoy every word.

And I did :) Highly recommend!!

Imperfect is really perfect

This was the funniest, sweetest, most intriguing who done it I've read in a very long time. The characters aren't just likeable, they are loveable. The plot was totally engaging from page one. The writing was funny laugh out loud hilarious. The story clipped along and kept you hooked with the mystery and the romance. Honestly you can't go wrong with this one.

The banter between Freya and Dean was wonderful! They have great chemistry and are perfect for each other. It's funny how they meet and gradually get to know each other as they work on solving a case together. There was a few twists in the book but it all makes the ending that much sweeter. I hope to see more books from the Imperfect series. Love the cover!

Born and raised in the historic UK city of St. Albans, John grew up in the lengthy shadow of London, finding as many opportunities as possible to gorge on the capital?s rich diet of museums and galleries. Good starting point for your city exploration

We purchased this before a trip to Vancouver and Whistler. First day in town we did the Gastown pub crawl, and highly recommend it. Good selection of bars and nice description of all the places on the tour. The included tear out map was good, but not great - we ended up using the free one available all over town instead. Coverage of outlying areas was better than I expected - we ended up using some of the recommendations in both Squamish and Whistler.

Great guide book!

I am glad I took this book to Vancouver with me. The maps and information were very good and seemed to be truly informed by a local. Of course, that is what we all want to aspire to in a guide book - local expertise, and this book seems to deliver. I also had the Fodor's book from the library with me, very good too.

Worst travel book I have ever bought

I have used lonely planet guidebooks to visit over 15 different countries and countless states (but probably not more than 50 :-). This is the absolutely worst guide book I have ever bought... ever. It is also the first, and probably last, city only guide book I have read. I assumed, clearly incorrectly, getting a city book as opposed to a country guidebook would give me more detailed info. This book is VERY poorly laid out. The organization is so bad you really have to read the whole thing to learn anything and the index is useless. The worst thing about this book is that each section seems to only highlight about 6 of the authors favorite places and everything else in that area seems to be ignored. So in an area where you could eat at over 60 restaurants, 6 are highlighted. The book also assumes a basic knowledge of the area, like that I would know what part of Vancouver Yalestown is in. Such a waste of money. If this were the first Lonely Planet Guide book I had bought I would never buy another. I probably will never get another Lonely Planet city guide.

~ GREAT BOOK ON AI ROBOT INTELLIGENCE

~ Great Book! Many interesting & practically applicable games, concepts, theorems, & formulas. Just needs a Robotics Laws update, it only shows 3, when now there are now more laws, look it up in Wikipedia: Laws of Robotics. Be aware the latest publication copyright of this book is 1985 & has only been updated slightly as it mentions in description.

Great casual read for the mathematician

Writing from a graduate student in pure mathematics point of view. Moreover, I am most interested in analysis with quite a bit interest in computability theory, logic, and finite state machine type stuff.

This book is a pretty casual read and is probably not for anyone wanting to ready themselves for AI research (as others have said). However, it is a really interested casual read that (thankfully) does get pretty mathematical. I find the exposition on the heavier math sides to be quite interesting. And, even though the book is definitely outdated, I would assume a lot of the theoretical ideas about AI still hold true for today. Regardless of whether or not uses statistics for AI now, there are a lot of really good ideas in this book I would assume are still important.

In short, I would probably recommend this book to anyone interested in ideas rather than applications in terms of AI. If you are a master at computability type stuff, this book's math exposition might be a little light, but the historical aspects and point of views written in this book probably make it worth it.

With each reading, there is something that I had not noticed before, which makes this a classic introduction.

A great introduction to Turing Machines and basics to other computational theories. Other books, speaking about Turing Machines, are either delves nothing about the technical details or is too mathematical at the start, which makes for bad substitutes for Turing's original writings. Granted there are not much on the German Enigma machines and their encoding and deciphering of messages. This being said about what may enhance the field of artificial intelligence since intelligence may be highly employed in the code breaking of Enigma, it is part of lost history and I doubt that anyone has any files on this aspect to describe something with some originality such as Alan Turing. Nevertheless, this book is both excellently approachable even if one has basic Biology or how computers' working parts represent non-human intelligence can be simulated.
I was able to understand most the material in the first couple of chapters upon first reading, but upon second reading, I was able to find this book very interesting because there were material that I thought that I knew upon first reading, the second time around reveals to me that I don't know them that well to have depth in learning from this highly deserved classic.

The lazy person's guide to helping yourself

I Moved Your Cheese, a satire on self-help books, written by Darrel Bristow-Bovey. This book has 96 pages (including last 3 pages BLANK to make the book look thicker) and has been published by New Holland Publishers (UK) Ltd (2002) and is distributed in India by Dolphin Publications.
The author, using humour, expresses his utter contempt for self-help books and those who read them and adds that the problem with the self-help books that litter the shelves of the bookstores and bedside tables of the nation, besides the fact that they are poorly written by unattractive authors, is that they expect you to do all the work. You are required to read them, remember key words, and perhaps even put their teachings into practice in everyday life.
The title I Moved Your Cheese implies a direct attack on the similarly named `Who Moved My Cheese?' by Dr. Spencer Johnson, a self-help book about dealing with change. But Darrel Bristow-Bovey has not limited himself to ridiculing just this; he makes disdainful references to Deepak Chopra and other self-proclaimed `gurus'.
I Moved Your Cheese is a total laugh riot. Darrel Bristow-Bovey, with his absurdly funny anecdotes and instances, will not disappoint readers seeking ridiculous humour. His chapter about the mango-throwing wise guy guru is hysterically funny and his take on Oprah and feng shui will have you sniggering smugly in your couch. His other stories about the Xam, his neighbour Bill, and his friend Chunko are sidesplitting. Instead of writing words of wisdom in cheese, like his forerunner, the author is found sardonically writing in the sand. Across the book, he is yelling, "Who moved my keys?" "I moved your geese" and other deliberately mocking lines.
And of course the process of "Osmatix", which the author himself has patented. The process where the reader not need read this book but should simply buy this book and keep it in a prominent position will make him/her a brighter, happier and more desirable person. Since, the pages have been treated with a revolutionary new formula that allows wisdom to pass directly from the page into the atmosphere, where it can be easily inhaled from any position.
With hilarity oozing from cover to cover, this book is a must-read for those who enjoy humour at it's mirthful best.

Makes you laugh - that helps, doesn't it? :-)

Despite repeated claims that "...this is not a self-help book", Darrel Bristow-Bovey has come up with what is probably the most universally applicable self-help book in existence today.
From start to finish, this book is a riot. The moment you read his acknowledgements and a list of prospective books yet to be written by him, you know that the author isn't planning on pulling any punches. Continuously parodying Spencer Johnson's altogether more serious "Who Moved My Cheese?", this book takes things even further by poking fun at almost every self-help book written, and takes a few swipes at social icons like Oprah for good measure. The irreverent, even farcical tone of the book is highlighted when the author speaks about patenting "Osmatix", a revolutionary chemical with which the pages have been treated so that it helps you even if you don't read it.
But once you accept the fact that this is a book meant to make you laugh, and NOT to make too much conventional sense, you'll enjoy every bit of it. Yeah, even if you like self-help books. Bristow-Bovey's acidic humor drips off every sentence, and hardly a page goes by without you having to catch your breath after busting our guts laughing. You'll shake your head in amazement at his pseudo-scientific dissection of self-help books as a breed, and itch to dispense bits of advise to friends (and enemies) about "embracing their inner ostrich egg".
But the irony of it all is that in writing a book to dash your faith in the self-help genre, Bristow-Bovey has delivered a book that delivers the simplest self-help formula of them all - Read something funny, laugh aloud, feel better.
Try it. Heck, it works... and it involves a lot less work than anything else of its kind on the racks. Take a bow, Darrel.

If you've ever had a self-help book given to you

The title is a parody of "Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson, but it doesn't stop at the title. Bristow-Bovey takes attack at self-help books with this work, which provides so much humor that every time you see someone reading a self-help book, you won't be able to stop chuckling. There is a story in the book about embrasing your inner ostrich egg, and it's absolutely precious. It encapsulates everything terrible about self-help books, but is so witty and well-crafted that I'm sure there's someone out there who took notes and is telling himself right now that he needs to embrace his inner ostrich egg.
If someone ever had the nerve to give you a self-help book, you should get them this book in return.
This book is sort of hard to get ahold of, so in spite of the warnings that Osmatix (a patented chemical treatment that allows you to benefit from the book without even reading it) is for one person only, I was forced to lend this book out. You won't read another self-help book after this.
