The way to keep a trail open is to walk it.

“The Grenada Revolution” moved from an immediate post-analytical urge for power to control the story to “the Caribbean present” over a quarter of a century later when “Operation Urgent Memory” is beckoned by the author.
Shalini Puri delves deep with rich detail into coming to terms with the near unfathomable loss of dreams and the claim on our thinking by the reality of looking back.
Hey, we were young.
You did not have to be in Grenada to be part of the swing of the times. What was happening in Grenada in the early days transferred to the observer miles away feelings of hope and possibility.
Some revolutionaries joined with others to work a plan they all together agreed would fulfill their mission. Grenadians felt needed, useful, important and filled with pride for their country.
Hopefulness and optimism about completing their vision for their nation, for example, accompanied by a drive fueled by euphoria and hard work, drew their loyalty to the group in a binding mode, which went one way—Forward Ever! Backward Never!—and one way only, until – surprise, surprise - there was a “right” way to talk with all the apt code words, and a “correct” way to think and behave.
Hey, we were young.
The sin of our collective hubris was the desire to possess – to control, to make order out of chaos, to educate, to set right, to show the way. We believed we were right with a passion. We were self-confident in our path towards freedom and justice.
Hey, we were young.
We were going to make history. We were making history.
Our good fortune ended, as did our youth.
The expressions of democracy of the Grenadian people versus the efficiency of a wise centralized power pulled Grenadians into a vortex of shattered lives and grief.

Now our march forward is to resolve what happened, to discuss what is not talked about, to confront the complexity of history made and look the unhealed wounds straight in the eye.
The matter of forgiveness to ourselves and to others means that people carrying pain can choose to give up their right to the revenge living within their souls. A mighty struggle ensues clouded by fear, but the kernel of hope we once had prevails.
