From beloved WWE champion AJ Mendez Brooks comes a raw and inspirational memoir about how her greatest weakness became the very means for her success, in the ring and in life.
Recently retired WWE superstar AJ Brooks is a powerhouse - strong, quirky, and totally confident. But that wasn't always the case. Growing up, AJ was a quiet girl trying to act "normal" when she felt anything but. As her family struggled with drug addiction, poverty, and mental illness, she found escape through comic books and video games, inspired by the tough and unconventional female characters. It wasn't until she discovered the WWE that she learned superheroes could be real.
Determined to become the superhero she'd always needed, AJ trained and sacrificed for years to finally achieve her dream. Yet she quickly faced industry pressure to play the role of the damsel in distress and dress more provocatively to cater to male fans. But she fought back and created an ass-kicking alter ego that was a genuine representation of herself: nerdy, enthusiastic, and a little bit crazy.
With humor and tremendous heart, AJ opens up for the first time about her harrowing struggle to understand her demons and gain control over her life. What most people view as a hardship, AJ embraced as inspiration for her superhero persona.
Charting her journey from a scrappy girl in an unstable home to empowered WWE champion, Crazy Is My Superpower is an unflinchingly honest and bravely confessional story about the long road to self-acceptance.

A fantastic biography to read, whether or not you're a wrestling fan.
By Alexander Lucard
I was a fan of AJ Lee when she was in the WWE, although she wouldn't have made my top five female wrestlers (Akira Hokuto, Medusa Miceli, Ivory, Lyta and Manami Toyota for the curious). Lee was definitely one of the highlights of the women's division while she was in it because she was an actual wrestler rather than just another fitness model the WWE hired to look good but put on a match with more blown spots than a Sabu/Mistico blindfold match (I love both those guys, Sorrysorrysorry!). I was sad when she and her husband left (the former due to injuries according to this book and the latter due to well...let's say political reasons.) So when I was asked to review this book for Amazon via Vine, I happily accepted. As long as the book wasn't ghost written, I was hoping that AJ's personality would come shining through much as it did when she was wrestling. This turned out to be the case and I loved every bit of this book.
Unlike some wrestling biographies like the late great Steve Williams, which was more about trying to convert people to Christianity or ones like Gary Hart, Road Warrior Animal or Ole Anderson where they just came off bitter about the business and everyone in it, "Crazy is My Superpower" is a love letter not only to professional wrestling, but is a reaffirming life story about triumphing over bad parents, mental illness and a male oriented industry where women are generally little more than T&A or comic relief. I would definitely put this in my top five wrestling biographies of all time (the other four are by Chris Jericho, Bobby Heenan, Larry Zbyszko and Mick Foley - albeit in no particular order). Even if you're a lapsed wrestling fan like myself who really only watches Lucha Underground and NJPW these days (both of which would be a fantastic fit for Mr. and Mrs. Brooks should they ever return to the squared circle BTW), you can really enjoy this book. There were plenty of times where I laughed out loud and even more where I could really feel her emotional pain as she recounted her childhood and brush with bipolar disorder. In fact, her home life sounds a lot like the one my wife grew up in, In fact. much of the book, from her writing style to her love of geeky things like comics, anime and video games reminded me a lot of my wife, especially her being married to an arrogant aging alternative icon who just happens to be straight edge. So I ended up identifying with AJ on the written page far more than I ever did when she was on WWE TV. Considering she was one of the best workers on the mike at her peak, that really says something about the quality of her writing ability.
If you go into this book expecting it to be 99% wrestling stories and breakdowns of angles by show or PPV, you will be massively disappointed. Mendez-Brook's time in the WWE is relegated towards the very end of the book and it's only briefly discussed. This is more akin to something like Booker T's first biography (although so much better) where the meat of the book is growing up, overcoming childhood and early adult obstacles and how pro wrestling pretty much saved her life. I mean, it's not like she was going to throw herself in front of a bus or the like, but it saved her for a series of low end go-nowhere jobs and it also gave her the mental and physical strength to be the woman she always wanted to be. So hey, expect this to be an actual biography rather than match descriptions, gossip and slagging off on other wrestlers in some sort of shoot. If you want that, there are plenty of other wrestling biographies to read that have all that.
You'll learn a lot about AJ's childhood. How she grew up with two parents that were more kids themselves than adults and how at times, she was raising them rather than the right way around. You'll learn how she lived in abject poverty for much of her life and it's amazing to think of all the things she overcame that were simply from really bad parenting. That doesn't mean her parents didn't love her - just that they were spectacularly bad at parenting, keeping a roof over her head, holding down jobs and the like. I remember feeling absolutely horrid when she relates dropping out of school due to her mother's mental illness. This is not a happy happy joy joy book. Yes, you will laugh a lot due to AJ's turn of phrase or some fantastically funny stories, but there is a real darkness and sadness to the first 20 or so years of Mendez-Brooks' life and you can't help feeling bad for her. The important thing is that she never gave up, was determined to become a pro wrestler and over came her size, massive amounts of sexism and misogyny from within the business and the fact a certain Director of Talent Relations (who is never named in the book but I have named their brother in this review.) directly told her that she was considered unf**kable by the fans and higher-ups. Ouch.
Again, even if you are not a fan of pro wrestling, you should be able to enjoy this book. I really enjoyed it. It's a book I will happily recommend to my friends who enjoy pro wrestling and to my friend who don't. Now I just wish she had a Steam account instead of just a Playstation one so I could gift her the Bubsy re-releases. Yes, AJ loves the Bubsy video games. Clearly she lives her gimmick.

Not so much a wrestling book as it a triumph over mental health
By Paul Stuart
If you're a WWE fan looking for an AJ Lee tell all about the industry's inner workings, you'll be sorely disappointed. Ditto in hoping for gossip about her famous husband. None there as well. In fact, she only begins to discuss her WWE career 2/3rds through the book.
Instead, you're left with perhaps the most brilliant, authentic autobiography I've read in ages, one by a very surprising source. 'Crazy Is My Superpower' is an incredibly well written, articulate, and empowering story of AJ's always difficult journey across the dangerous pathway of bipolar disorder. Her candid disclosures both about herself and her family on this topic will produce tears and fist pumps...at the same time. She really lays it out there, in a sensitive, non-preachy, and truly kind manner. My newfound respect for this lady now knows no boundaries.
For anyone suffering from bipolar disorder and/or loves someone who does, I would consider this a must read. While non-clinical, it provides a plethora of warning signs also tactics to deal with the condition, ones that may very well save someone's life. For young women...especially wrestling fans...who fit this description...this needs to be in your hands, yesterday. Coming from a man, mind you.
AJ Mendez Brooks is a terrific writer, and this one terrific book. Well done.

Has a strong writing voice. Very expressive.
By Jane Hinrichs
Ms. Brooks has a very strong writing voice. She's funny. She tells it like it is. Amazingly she remembers what she was thinking as a 7 year old. She is very funny and honest and will be very inspiring for women her age or younger. I had a problem with this book but I think it is because of my age. She uses profanity freely, but this is how many in her generation talk. This book is ideal for a certain someone. I'm just not that person.
