Fundamentals of Natural Computing: Basic Concepts, Algorithms, and Applications (Chapman & Hall/CRC Computer and Information Science Series

Natural computing brings together nature and computing to develop new computational tools for problem solving; to synthesize natural patterns and behaviors in computers; and to potentially design novel types of computers. Fundamentals of Natural Computing: Basic Concepts, Algorithms, and Applications presents a wide-ranging survey of novel techniques and important applications of nature-based computing.

This book presents theoretical and philosophical discussions, pseudocodes for algorithms, and computing paradigms that illustrate how computational techniques can be used to solve complex problems, simulate nature, explain natural phenomena, and possibly allow the development of new computing technologies. The author features a consistent and approachable, textbook-style format that includes lucid figures, tables, real-world examples, and different types of exercises that complement the concepts while encouraging readers to apply the computational tools in each chapter. Building progressively upon core concepts of nature-inspired techniques, the topics include evolutionary computing, neurocomputing, swarm intelligence, immunocomputing, fractal geometry, artificial life, quantum computing, and DNA computing.

Fundamentals of Natural Computing is a self-contained introduction and a practical guide to nature-based computational approaches that will find numerous applications in a variety of growing fields including engineering, computer science, biological modeling, and bioinformatics.

Fun concepts, difficult to implement
By mdegges
I had to get this book for a bio programming course. Overall, I found it to be very useful at explaining concepts clearly. The field was completely new to me but I found the concepts really interesting, and just recently finished reading the chapters we didn't cover. What I found especially useful was the pseudocode that was included in most sections. It was a challenge to convert into python code since I had no previous experience programming with python, but the pseudocode really helped me simplify the complex algorithms. In my course we covered the ant clustering algorithm, genetic algorithms, lsystems, boolean networks, cellular automata, biomorphs, and the game of life. All of these topics were covered in the book and made for some fun projects.

I'm giving this three stars because some concepts were not explained as well as they could have been (for beginners). I spent a lot of time doing online research to be able to write the programs I needed to for class. While the pseudocode was helpful, its variables were not always defined and explained. A lot of us in class understood the concepts but were not able to create working implementations. There were also some problems I ran into (such as overlapping trees in my lsystem implementation) which led me believe I was doing something wrong, when in fact it was just something that the authors didn't explain. It's little things like this that can make programmaing overly complicated, but great technical books explain them in detail.

Everything in one place!
By Marcos A. Leone Fh
This book has everything one needs to know about natural computer. Specially for those who are initiating themselves in this field of study. Topics are not deeply discussed but this is also great if you want to have this book as all-in-one reference (you can go deeper into one specific subject using this book as a guide to find other references).

Revisão dos principais tópicos sobre Computação Natura
By Renato M. Leite
