An Excellent Introduction to German History

For those who teach German History and need a book to assign to students, Carr is still the best introduction. While not as sophisticated as some of the more recent offerings, with its emphasis on political history, it has the advantage of preserving a strong narrative line. Thus it re-inforces lectures and provides the necessary chronological background for other readings drawn from cultural and social history. It should go back into print!

A (barely) decent read unless you're already versed in Germany history.

I picked this book up to add to my knowledge of Germany pre-1871 unification and for the reconstruction period after WW2. This book has a lot of interesting information and facts, but frustratingly, the author references many historical events, individuals, and treaties that he did not introduce or establish in his book. As someone who doesn't have an very good grasp of Germany's history, this took me away from enjoying this book as I always had to cross-check some information with an outside source, or just find myself scratching my head at the lines that I was reading. The book is also written in a very dry and analytic style. The author isn't much for compelling narrative, which will probably have the reader summoning an overwhelming amount of will to not become bored while reading.
I would only recommend this book to someone who already has a basic overview of the periods that are being covered in this book and already has an idea of the major historical events and individuals that are key to modern German history.
