Chapter OneParts of SpeechIN THESE NEXT few chapters, think of me as your grammar guide, intent on demystifying grammar. I'm a practical person--I've given people batteries and socks as birthday presents. That is what I want to give you, the things everyone will use--the batteries and socks of writing.In order to do that, we need a common language between the professionals and us. If I quickly spewed out terms like antecedents, future progressive tense, and subjunctive verbs, you'd probably run away screaming, but you do need to know some of these terms and what they mean. I promise to explain these words (and their usefulness) and, if I can, give you other words to use in their place.To begin, you need to know the parts of speech, the function of different groups of words. In Chapter Two, you'll use this knowledge to put together sentences. After that, punctuation. Then the world is your oyster.Or your pizza.I prefer pizza.1-1 NOUNSA noun is a person, place, or thing. Things can be concrete, like rocks, or abstract ideas, like courage or purpose. Nouns are divided into two types: proper nouns and common nouns.Proper nouns name specific people, places, or things, such as Grammar Girl, Mississippi River, and Golden Gate Bridge. They are names. On the other hand, common nouns name general people, places, or things. The words girl, river, and bridge aren't capitalized because they are common nouns that don't name any one individual person, place, or thing.To learn how these general capitalization rules apply to specific words, such as nicknames, planets, seasons, directions, and dog breeds, see Appendix section A-1.1-2 PLURALS: NOUNS, NOUNS EVERYWHEREYou have one computer, but you'd love another one. Easy--at least on paper. Add an s. Ta-da! You have two computers (or more). Magic!It's fairly easy to make nouns plural. The last letter or letters of the word determine what you need to do.Usually, you just add s.When the word ends in ch, s, sh, x, or z, add es.When the word ends in y, look at the letter before y.If it's a vowel, add s.If the letter before y is a consonant, change the y to i and then add es.Words that end in o don't follow specific rules; some words take an s to become plural and other words take an es to become plural. You have to memorize the spellings.Making Abbreviations PluralAdd s to make abbreviations plural, but make sure it's a small s, not a capitalized one (and don't use an apostrophe). The rule is the same regardless of whether the abbreviation has periods.See section 3-34 for how to make single letters plural.Tricky Nouns: Mouse? Mice? Meese?With some nouns, you just have to know what the plural is, such as mice (for mouse), teeth (for tooth), deer (for deer), knives (for knife), children (for child), and oxen (for ox). Some of our words retain qualities of Latin or other languages they came from, so their plurals aren't formed in a standard way. Examples include appendices(plural of appendix), phenomena (plural of phenomenon), and bases (plural of basis).If you're not sure what the plural form of a word is, go to the dictionary. The dictionary is your friend--honest. It will give you the plural of the word if the plural isn't standard.Check It OutRarely, language experts will say you can choose between two acceptable plural forms of a noun. For example, when you're talking about a computer mouse, the plural can be either mice or mouses, and although most people who work with plants prefer the plural cacti, most dictionaries say either cacti or cactuses is fine. Index becomes indices when you're writing about math or science, but in other cases it is usually made plural as indexes; and although buses is the preferred plural of bus, you can also go with busses. When in doubt, check a dictionary. The first plural form listed is the one that is most common.1-3 VERBS: READY, CAMERA, ACTIONWe have our people, places, and things--nouns--established, but they're not doing anything. We have to get those things, people, and ideas moving. Enter the verb! Verbs add movement to your writing. Like nouns, verbs come in different categories.1-4 TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBSThe first way you can put verbs in groups is to separate them into transitive and intransitive piles. There's an easy way to remember those names, which I'll get to in a minute.Transitive verbs take their action on something--the object. If you remove the object from these sentences, they don't make sense:He will lay the book on the table.(Lay is the verb; the book is the necessary object.)She gave the pearl to the wizard.(Gave is the verb; the pearl is the necessary object.)Intransitive verbs don't need an object; they can take action all by themselves. No object is necessary in these sentences:He ran.She sits.The Quick and Dirty Tip to remember what these names mean is to think of a transitive verb as transferring its action to the object. Both transitive and transfer start with the prefix trans.Some verbs can be transitive or intransitive depending on how they are used.They cheered. (intransitive)They cheered the team. (transitive)1-5 ACTION VERBS AND LINKING VERBSThe next way you can put verbs into groups is to sort them into action verbs and linking verbs. Action verbs are exactly what they sound like: they describe actions. Verbs such as run, jump, and swim are action verbs.Linking verbs describe a state of being. The action isn't so rugged, but more thoughtful, connective, or complicated. Linking verbs aren't about actions as much as they are about connecting other words together.The verb to be is the basic linking verb. The word is is a form of the verb to be. If I say, "Squiggly is yellow," the main purpose of is is to link the word Squiggly with the word yellow.Other linking verbs include seem, appear, look, become, and verbs that describe senses, such as feel and smell. There are at least sixty linking verbs in the English language.Of course, it can't be as simple as action versus linking verbs. You wouldn't need me if it were.The complication is that some verbs--such as the sensing verbs--can be both linking verbs and action verbs. A Quick and Dirty Tip to help you figure out whether you're dealing with a linking or an action verb is to see if you can replace the verb with a form of to be. If so, then it's probably a linking verb.He smells bad. (He has a bad odor.)He is bad. (He is ill-behaved.)In the above sentence, smells is a linking verb because if you replace smells with the word is, the sentence still makes sense. Bad describes the noun he, not the verb smells or is.Now see what happens when smells is an action verb.He smells badly. (His nose isn't working.)He is badly. (This doesn't make sense.)Replacing smells with is doesn't work, so you know you have an action verb. Badly describes the verb smells, not the noun he.1-6 VERB TENSES: LIVE FOR TODAYPeople say, "Live for today, forget about yesterday, and ignore tomorrow." But if everyone did live in the now, I wouldn't get to invite you to explore the exciting world of verb tenses.Fortunately, people dwell on the past and plan for the future; history, for example, by definition, happened in the past. Verbs reflect time, which is why we need tenses.Verbs come in three varieties--present, past, and future. Today, yesterday, and tomorrow.Kilroy is here.Kilroy was here.Kilroy will be here.But that's not all. Each verb tense can then be spliced into more categories.Simple--the end of the action is unknown or unimportant. Things are simple when time isn't important.The captain swims. (simple present)Perfect--the action has ended or will end; it is complete or will be completed. It starts. It ends. It's known. It's completed. Things are perfect when you know everything about them.The captain has swum. (present perfect)Progressive--the action is ongoing, progressing, or will be ongoing; it is continuous. We have no idea when it will end; it's incomplete.The captain is swimming. (present progressive)

I teach college students English Composition. I feel like Grammar Girl (Mignon Fogarty) took my curriculum and converted it to a book. This writing guide for students is perfect. It's written in a very logical order and in a style that students should find easy to follow. As an instructor, I love her wit and obvious enthusiasm for grammar. I know most students are not excited to read about English and its grammatical rules, but this book makes those rules fun and gives hints on how to remember them. Although the title says this book is "for students," I think anyone who communicates in written form should own it. That means you.

Antigone's faithfulness to her dead brother and his proper burial, and her defiance of the dictator Creon, seals her fate. Originally produced in Paris during the Nazi occupation, Anouilh's Antigone was seen by the French as theatre of the resistance and by the Germans as an affirmation of authority.

Includes an interview with translator Christopher Nixon and director Brendon Fox.

Also includes an interview with Ned Chaillet, a playwright, radio producer and director for the BBC. Chaillet is the former Deputy Drama Critic for the Times of London and the London theatre critic for the Wall Street Journal-Europe. He spoke with us about Antigone in the context of World War Two, the differences bewtween the original myth of Sophocles and the Anouilh version, and Anouilh's influence on later playwrights.

About the Author

Jean Anouilh (1910-87) is one of France's best-known dramatists. His play, ANTIGONE, was published during the Nazi occcupation of France in 1944 and is his most famous work.

Antigone

Anoulih's version of Antigone was adapted for the time in which he lived. It contains hidden symbols to, at the time, both get the book past the censors and give the french audience moral and courage to stand up to the Nazi's and follow their beliefs. The characters are adapted slightly to fit his version, ie Tieresas is left out and a nurse is introduced. He also had to adapt the personalities of the characters, for instance Antigone develops a whiny habit, and Creon is seen as a "good guy". This was also done in order to get the play by the sensors. It is a well-written play with rounder characters than the original. This version would be better read after reading the original.

A Most Difficult Play to Act

This version of Antigone written under German occupation is most difficult to act. Creon may be played as a reasonable man who has power forced upon him. And Antigone could be played as dangerous fanatic who flouts law that is necessary to preserve order in society on the edge of chaos. It is a masterpiece of abiguity. In certain ways the playwright has been more subtle than Sophocles. The problem that bothers most people who read the play is that the context of Sophocles is not the context of Anouilh. A director who doesn't understand this will try vainly to make Antigone into a Resitance fighter and Creon a a demonic Nazi. Doesn't work that way. This is a must read along side Sophocles.

Skeleton

This should have been an exciting story but...the overabundance of description about places and people and food and et cetera just sort of bogged everything down. I found myself skimming through to get to the end. Which turned out not to be an end at all. Oh, well. It's not worth my time to read the next one. Too much detail.

About the Author
Patrick Modiano was born in the Boulogne-Billancourt suburb of Paris near the end of the Nazi occupation of France. He studied at the Lyc�e Henri-IV and the Sorbonne. As a teenager he took geometry lessons with the writer Raymond Queneau, who would play a key role in his development. He has written more than thirty works of fiction, including novels, children’s books, and the screenplay for Louis Malle’s film Lacombe, Lucien. In 2014, Modiano won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Chris Clarke was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada, and lives and works in and around New York City. His published translations include work by Oulipo members Raymond Queneau and Olivier Salon. He currently teaches French and is translating a novel by Pierre Mac Orlan, which will be published in 2016.

Rich and Complex

This is the 14th book by Modiano that I've read, and I'll have to rate it as one of my favorites. As with many of his books it is about identity, memory, time, forgetting and escaping—and of course, Paris. I find it necessary to have my well worn Borsch laminated map of Paris on hand whenever I read Modiano. And now I will also recommend that Modiano fans also read his memoir, Pedigree, in order to fully comprehend where he is coming from, as much of what he writes is autobiographical, this book being no exception.
This novella is written in four chapters, each from the first person point of view of four different characters, all of whom have a connection to a 22 year old young woman known as Louki, a name given to her in a baptism or second birth by someone known as Tarzan, or was it Zacharias? The large cast of characters can be confusing. There is a cast of about two dozen of mixed nationalities and backgrounds, most of whom frequent the Caf� Cond�. They have interesting nicknames such as "the Jaguar", "the Captain", "Crossbones", and of course Louki. She is also known as Jacqueline Choureau nee Delanque, formerly of Montmartre 9th and 18th arrondissements, and currently of Montparnasse 6th and 14th arrondissements. She is reading Lost Horizon, which figures prominently in the action. Modiano uses the Caf� Cond� as a fixed point around which much of the action takes place.

The story starts with the narration of a young engineering student who is trying to fit in with the artsy crowd at Cond�. The action opens with a description of a roster of the Cond� habitu�s that is kept by fellow habitu� Bowing, the Captain. It catches the attention of a Mr. Pierre Caisley, who says he is an "art publisher". He seems to be interested in Louki, and anyone she hangs out with.

We find out in the second chapter that Mr. Caisley is not who he says he is, and the story starts to cascade and tumble from there. Action moves to multiple locations around Paris as Louki is looking for "neutral zones" that are places of safety, always trying to avoid the "black holes", or places of danger.

The third chapter is narrated by Louki, and she paints a very different picture of the events that we have witnessed so far. We learn about drugs and the role they play in the plot. In chapter 4, Roland, the aspiring writer steps forward. To me he is the personification of Modiano himself at age twenty. He identifies with Louki and her attempts to flee and hide, for he has had many of the same experiences. All four of the narrators come together in the final pages for a dramatic ending that I truly did not see coming.

It is a short book, but very rich and complex. I had to read it twice in order to catch all the details and nuance. Modiano is able to pack a lot into a very small package. I would rate this book at the same level as Missing Person (1978), Honeymoon (1990),and Dora Bruder (1997). The four books give the reader a span of work spreading more than 35 years and is a good starting point for anyone interested in Modiano.

Great for really understanding Montessori Method, but a bit intimidating

Of the four books I have about using the Montessori Method at home with this age group, this is by far the best in some ways. It gives the clearest understanding of the sequence of activities, dividing them into groups or "periods"--and of the flexibility of the sequence. It has the clearest explanations of the presentation of each set of materials, and of the different exercises that can be done (in order) with each, as well as giving a good idea of which exercises lead directly or indirectly to which others. It has helpful tips for making some of the materials yourself at home (and of course instructions for making many more can be found on the internet).

And it has the best explanation of how to follow the Montessori method at home. Here are a few quotes that really opened my eyes:
"Imagine that the child has recently been given a number of very high quality presentations, the cleaned and polished materials are neatly stored in their designted places in the carefully ordered Montessori environment, you are sitting expectantly in the corner waiting to observe some of that remarkable Montessori self-teaching, and what is the child doing? Playing with the cat. Sound frustrating? Well, it shouldn't! We must be very careful not to get in the frame of mind that there is anything wrong with the child's playing with the cat, nor indeed with any typically childlike behavior. The point cannot be emphasized too strongly that the Montessori environment is only there to help the child. Forcing it on the child, making evident our expectations of the wonders that Montessori's method can work...will only cause harm and distress."

"A presentation to a young child should never consist, in whole or in part, of verbal instructions. The essence of a good presentation is that you don't explain the activity to the child--you show it."

"You must not draw attention to error...When an error occurs, you must decide whether it happened because the child was momentarily distracted or careless (in which case you simply ignore the error and continue as though it didn't happen), or if the error was fundamental to the concepts being explored (such as confusion about terminology or organization). In the latter case, you should gracefully and without any expression of disappointment bring the activity to a close. Later, at another unrelated time, you can give a special presentation that clears up the particular confusion in the child's mind. This may mean going back one or two activities to re-establish the necessary fundamental principles."

The downside is that the book's emphasis on perfection can be quite intimidating. The directions for Pouring Beans between Two Jugs comprise 26 steps. The page on how to present activities states, "Each presentation you give must be absolutely perfect..." While this may be the case in Montessori schools, homeschooling parents may find it intimidating and unrealistic to the point of immobilization.

I do recommend buying this book. If it's too perfectionistic and intimidating, then also buy Teach Me to Do It Myself: Montessori Activities for You and Your Child, which has many of the same activities with more accessible instructions, though without giving nearly as thorough an understanding of the underlying principles.

excellent book - perfect for homeschoolers or school teachers

This book is wonderful if you've already had an introduction to Montessori principles and ideas about learning, and would like directions for making some of these materials to use with your own children or in a classroom setting. I have incorporated several Montessori materials into my public school teaching, but since I was not in a position to quit teaching and start over, I found this book invaluable for laying out the steps on how to introduce the materials to children and teach them to work with them. Even when I use materials that I've purchased for my classsroom (the puzzle maps, for example), I have found that following the procedures for introducing the work in this book has made all the difference in how the children use them and how successful and self motivated they are in working with them. This book is an absolute bargain, and is a great introduction to using the Montessori materials and making them yourself. I would recommend it highly to anyone who is interested in homeschooling, or supplementing their classroom instruction with the always reliable Montessori materials.

Secrets of the Sabians

The Quran mentions four “Peoples of the Book” which are entitled to “protection” from the true (Muslim) believers: Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians and Sabians. The mysterious Sabians have never been identified, but the Gnostic Mandeans of Iraq (who still exist, but mostly in the Diaspora) successfully convinced the Muslim conquerors that *they* were the group referenced. Another common proposal is that the Sabians were the pagans of Harran or Carrhae, perhaps the last surviving pagan group of the ex-Roman Empire. They supposedly convinced the Muslims to spare them by claiming Hermes Trismegistus as their “monotheist” prophet and, I suppose, the Corpus Hermeticum as their scripture! If so, it's possible that the Hermetic lore which was preserved within traditional Islam comes from the Harranian Sabians.

This little book, “Secrets of Planetary Ritual”, is an excerpt from a much larger work, the Picatrix, regarded as one of the most important works of medieval magic. The Picatrix exist in both Arabic and Latin versions. The critical Latin edition has been translated to English by Christopher Warnock and John Michael Greer (whom we have met before in other contexts). The Picatrix contains several chapters on astrological magic, supposedly derived from the traditions of the Sabians of Harran. “Secrets of Planetary Ritual” contain these particular chapters.

The work isn't particularly interesting for the general reader, being a long-winding rendition of various rituals the purpose of which is to supplicate the planetary deities. Sometimes, the rituals are unintentionally humorous, as when the work declares that supplication of Mars requires beheading a leopard “if you can find one”, or (if you can't?) killing a mouse and eating its liver! It's not immediately clear what's the most difficult thing to do – procure a leopard in Renaissance Italy or eating the liver of a house mouse… The work also contains a short description of an initiation ritual for teenage boys into the cult of Mars. Apart from the Sabians, the Picatrix references magical works attributed to Aristotle.

Both translators believe in the efficacy of magic, indeed both have magick blogs on the web, and they therefore warn their readers not to use the malefic spells contained in the rituals. They also assure us that the magic works even without animal sacrifice, so any stray leopards or mice in your backyard can sleep safely. “Secrets of Planetary Magic” is rounded off by shorter versions of the planetary incantations, prepared by Christopher Warnock. They apparently work just as well as the longer ones!

I bought this mostly because of the Sabian angle, and I admit that I didn't find it particularly interesting. Still, probably worth three stars due to the translation efforts of Warnock and JMG.
